German stamps 2021 – cancel cornucopia
Cataloguing German stamps 2021 would have been a fast job if I was only after stamps. But, alas, I like cancels, FDCs, and info sheets. There were certain interesting challenges in finding everything on offer. These extended to the usual translation issues, discovering not all information can be found in one location, and specifics about types of philatelic items on offer. I can’t believe I’m only up to April. Next year, I’ll be sure to start Germany early.
Not quite sure what to do with a few items Deutsche Post offers, like Steckkarten, which translates to plug-in cards. I want to get my hands on one to fully understand what they are, but they appear to be thematic or year packs. I really need to find my German-to-English dictionary.
German stamps 2021 cancels/postmarks
If there’s one thing Germany excels at, it’s issuing magnificent postmarks. However, they presented an odd challenge this time. I struggled with the 3 levels offered. It might be an odd translation issue I’m dealing with, or perhaps Germany simply takes a more expansive approach to them.
First batch of cancels was pretty straight forward, the basic commemoratives. These were both stand alone cancels and issued with specific stamps & covers. I’ve noticed over the past few months that this is common practice in many countries, unlike Canada. They are richly detailed pictorial commemoratives like this one:
These postmarks stand on their own in their ability to tell a story about the event and the blue ink makes them standout. Often you don’t need a translation to understand the topic. The above is pretty easy to decode. It’s a cancel for the Hamburg U-bahn. The majority in this category are like this.
The second set are called 3rd party advertising cancels. These may be familiar with old time collectors. We’d occasionally come across them when a company would commission a special cancel for their product. Off the top of my head, I can’t remember any from Canada Post, but I do remember seeing ones for Kit Kat chocolate bars from Royal Mail. I had one in my collection for years but swapped it for a couple of airmail stamps not long ago. Germany issued a few this year, including this one for the Suhler Holiday Region:
I tagged these so people know where to hunt for them and to decide if they want strictly postal administration cancels or like me, will grab any, regardless.
The third set is the area that caused confusion. These translated to Self-promotion postmark (Stempel mit Post-Eigenwerbung).
This cancel, celebrating the 500 years of the mountain town of Marienberg, is a sample of the Self-promotion postmark offered. They appear to be what could be considered non commercial sponsored issues. Again, the translations I found aren’t that clear. If I’m incorrect on this, please let me know.
Bit of confusion about dates as well
Another interesting feature was the different issue dates for stamps, FDC and cancels. They don’t always come out the same day. Because the material comes from different sources within the Deutsche Post site, it’s hard to keep it all straight. I’ve made a note of it when necessary or separated them out. That should make it easy for you to find what you’re looking for.
Cool themes & digital issues for German stamps 2021
The first issue of 2021, the Settlement in Lübeck made me think Deutsche Post was issuing a stamp with an image from City Skylines on it. Took a bit to realise what I was looking at. Haven’t made up my mind about it. But the diversity and quality of stamps & cancels offered is exciting. Germany sometimes uses an innovative approach to the traditional cancel. Case in point:
The Friedrich Ebert pair strays from the normal drawing/sketch cancel and incorporates photography into them. This is quite a design trick. Cancels are pretty small and they were able to preserve the details and clarity with each one.
This is Germany’s “year of digital” in both design and security features. Deutsche Post has moved to include QR codes onto stamps. Also called matrix codes when translated, they offer the sender security features and the ability to track and trace a letter or package as it’s travelling through the system. A number of stamps have been included in the “matrix” program. Not sure if matrix is the correct word, but it makes me a giggle for obvious reasons.
Lots of thematics to collect as well – ships, architecture, anniversaries, more history than you can shake a stick at, fairy tales and der Maus. No not that Maus, a more interesting one. So many things to collect, so little time.
Cheers
Catpaw

Stamp Day – Treasures of Philately – Bordeaux Letter
1 stamp, sheet, 2 cancels, special cancel
The so-called Bordeaux letter was abandoned on 4 October 1847 by the wine merchant Edward Francis in Port Louis, who
Capital of the then British colony Mauritius, and was addressed to the trading partner Ducan & Lurguie in Bordeaux, France. Because the red 1-penny stamp was intended for domestic mail and the blue 2-pence stamp for foreign mail, it would not have been necessary to use both on the same envelope. The error may have stemmed from the fact that the island’s first stamps had not been issued until September 22. With stops in England, Boulogne and Paris, the letter reached its destination after 85 days on 28 December 1847 and diligently collected stamps on the way that bear witness to the various stations of its long journey.
For 55 years, the Bordeaux letter lay unnoticed in the archive of the wine merchant – until a schoolboy made the discovery of his life in 1902 while rummaging through the dusty correspondence. The following year he sold it for 40,000 francs. Since then, the letter has changed hands several times – especially later during spectacular auctions – and in 1993 finally brought in the record sum of over 6 million Swiss francs, which corresponds to a current value of around 5.5 million euros. Even today, the Bordeaux letter is one of the most valuable philatelic objects in the world because of its legendary stamps, the diverse stamping and the good preservation.
