Brazil 2021 – a little Lennon & lace

Brazil 2021 – a little Lennon & lace

I went on a Brazil 2021 stamp bender recently. I think I tweeted 6 Brazilian stamps in a row because I was so enamoured with the art. Something funny has happened to me over the last few years. I’ve come to realise my tastes in art are nothing like they were in my younger years. I’m far more adventurous & crave art that challenges me. And the Brazilian artwork this year, really tweaked that need.

Bernardo França’s Professional Cleaners stamp caught my attention first. And from there I kept digging deeper into Brazilian stamps. One of the great delights in stamp collecting is finding an entire country that tantalizes the imagination & collecting bug. Hope you enjoy the stamps as much as I do. Occasionally, I am at a loss for things to explore because the stamps simply don’t tick any boxes for me. Brazil was the opposite. the more I explored, the more I enjoyed.

Quick note

In the various stamp lists I publish, I often include issues that are not for public use, such as Brazil’s May 3 Communications Week stamp, or special issues designed and sponsored by groups. These stamps (and cancels) don’t appear in the general release lists, but since they are printed and sold by the post office, I think they belong. It just makes them a bit harder to get your stamp collecting hands on.

Zélia Suassuna Auto da Compadecida Brazil 2021

1 stamp, sheets of  18, cancel

Artist: Zélia Suassuna

This stamp is packed with imagery. Brazil post wrote:

The piece depicts a kind of emblem with the characteristics of armorial aesthetics. The art is signed by the playwright’s wife, Zélia Suassuna, son Manuel Dantas Suassuna and graphic designer Ricardo Gouveia de Melo. The authors claim that the print “was associated with the immortal love that united and will continue to unite Zélia and Ariano”. Through a digital composition, the label uses a drawing by Zélia that illustrated the cover of the latest edition of the piece, released by nova fronteira publishing house.

Auto da Compadecida is a three-act, self-shaped play written in 1955. His first staging took place in 1956, in Recife, Pernambuco. The play designed Suassuna throughout the country and had three film adaptations. In 1999, it was presented as a TV miniseries, being the best known version, which was also taken to the movies. With striking and folkloric characters, such as João Grilo, Chicó, Cangaceiro, Encourado, Manuel (Jesus Cristo) and Compadecida – which intercedes for all in the trial – is considered, in the view of many theater critics, one of the most important works of modern Brazilian dramaturgy.
On ariano Suassuna’s birthday, Auto da Compadecida is the subject of a special stamp – Post Office – Press Room (correios.com.br)

Surinam’s 2021 stamps – oh my BIRDS!

Surinam’s 2021 stamps – oh my BIRDS!

Surinam’s 2021 stamps should delight bird collectors. Three large sets of birds from around the world appear on 18 stamps this year. There are even more flowers & butterflies to admire & collect.

Although Surinam is heavy with nature stamps, it does offer up a few great stamps for aerophilately collectors. Two stamps featuring Boeing jets appear along with a yet to be revealed series titled “Classic Planes” . This is the set I’ll be looking forward to the most.  Hard to say which aircraft will make the list. But my favourite is the Antoinette Flyer, but it’s usually left off most lists.  We’ll have to wait.

Onward to the stamps!

Treasure trove of culture in Azerbaijan stamps

Treasure trove of culture in Azerbaijan stamps

Azerbaijan stamps have been eye opening. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered the rich, complex history and art of Azerbaijan. It’s another case of “Holy shit I missed a lot”.  Growing up, I had no access to stamps beyond Canada, except for the odd US or British stamp. And that set a pattern for my collecting for decades to come. It’s hard to shake off old habits, luckily this project of exploring 2021 stamps introduced me to a wide array of countries that were never on my radar.

A little context before Azerbaijan stamps are started

Stamps are more than little bit of paper to stick on envelopes.  When you look at their stamps, you are offered a small window onto that country’s culture & heritage. I try to be respectful when I deal with different countries and see this as a chance to learn and appreciate them.

I’m a bit embarrassed to say I never looked at Azerbaijan before.  It’s a country rich in archeological and historical significance. But what has captured me the most is the folk history & stories I’ve slowly uncovered, thanks to Azerbaijan stamps. The Toronto Public Library has a number of books on Azerbaijan history and culture. Unfortunately, most are reference only, so I’m waiting for the Reference Library to reopen.

Down the research rabbit hole

I think that’s what I love about philately. Being introduced to new countries and histories I was previously unaware of. I started this article nearly 2 months ago, but I kept chasing new bits of information about the country and well, one thing led to another and …. Let’s just say, I now realise how little I know and how much I want to learn more about the country.

To my North American bred eye, Azerbaijan artwork and design has been unusual and challenging. Previous years have offered up a bonanza of cultural information.

Since ancient times, Azerbaijan has played an important role as a melting pot of civilizations, serving as a venue and major transfer point of different cultural traditions and customs. The intangible heritage of Azerbaijan, diverse and rich, continues to be transmitted from generation to generation. From a cultural and historic point of view, Azerbaijan has close ties with the history of the Silk Roads and was strongly affected by its development. One point of reference for this strong link between the Silk Roads and Azerbaijan is the poem “Seven Beauties” by the great poet Nizami Ganjavi (1141-1209, Ganja, Azerbaijan), in which he allegorically describes the countries lying along these great Roads. Azerbaijan | Silk Roads Programme (unesco.org)

By the way, I’m hoping Azerbaijan issues a stamp for the UNESCO 2021 Intangible Cultural Heritage series. I can’t even imagine where Azerbaijan post would start. As the rest of the year progresses and my bibliography of resources improve, I’ll try to include references for you to use. This page started as a straightforward listing of stamps from a country I had little knowledge of and has turned into a full blown love affair that now extends to the entire Caucasus.

Novruz 2020 mini sheet

  Novruz 2020 mini sheet

Learn more about this important holiday Azerbaijani Novruz – Culture – Visions of Azerbaijan Magazine. It’s a celebration of the New Year and the coming of spring.

The centuries of Novruz celebrations in Azerbaijan have left an indelible mark on the poetic heritage. There are many poems devoted to Novruz written by classical authors and modern poets. People have always sung songs about Novruz, both folk songs and professional pieces. The great Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi wrote in his Khamsa or Five Tales that Novruz was celebrated in 350 BC, that is, 24 centuries ago.

As the most striking expression of the Azerbaijani national spirit, official celebrations of Novruz were banned during the Soviet years. But, in spite of the prohibition, every Azerbaijani family considered it a moral obligation to celebrate the holiday with all its customs. Azerbaijani Novruz (see link above)

  • Caucasian Leopard (Panthera Pardus Ciscaucasica)

The Caucasian, Persian or West Asian leopard, as it’s also known, used to be widespread throughout the Caucasus. Numbers fell dramatically in the 20th century, largely because of hunting, persecution, trapping and poisoning. Since the 20th century, the leopard is listed in the Red Book.

Until the early 2000s, very little information was available about leopards living in the territory of Azerbaijan. But thanks to the studies of past 15 years, Azerbaijani zoologists discovered their traces in Hirkan forest, Nakhchivan and Mingachevir water reservoir. 2021 stamps for French Polynesia

2021 stamps for French Polynesia are small in number.  But fans of engraved stamps should be thrilled with the first issue, Magellan’s Voyage. Renowned engraver & designer Yves Beaujard’s work kicks off the year with a beautifully detailed mini sheet.

Alas, no commemorative postmarks are available or FDCs. Bit of a shame, because I think they could make some kick ass designs.

Pakistan Post’s 2021 stamps

Pakistan Post’s 2021 stamps

Pakistan Post’s 2021 stamps was my first long dive into stamps from Pakistan. I wandered through 14 years worth of philately to get a better feel for them. It’s interesting how much you miss when you get caught up in your own collecting bubble.

Unfortunately, the images aren’t as crisp as I normally like to present. I pulled them off info sheets Pakistan Post issues for each stamp. The  releases are a bit quirky but chock-a-block full of information about the stamps and the topic. All the releases dating to 2006 can be found  here: Pakistan Post/Stamps-2019 (pakpost.gov.pk. They offer a bit of insight into the reason for the design and background. The June Insulin stamp, for instance, ties  the discovery of insulin to the present day COVID crisis:

We are living in extraordinarily difficult times in which people with diabetes are facing an additional major heath threat. Regretfully, we have seen that people living with diabetes can be more susceptible to the worst complications to COVID-19. The evidence suggests fatalities are markedly higher among people with underlying health conditions such as diabetes. The current situation may lead to an increase in diabetes complications over the coming years. Moreover, we should worry that the legacy of the pandemic will see resources and attention focused on infectious diseases to the detriment of all non-communicable diseases, including diabetes.  Pakistan Post news release 2021-04

The newsletter for the World Environment day is more detailed. It lays out an extensive list of green initiatives undertaken by the Pakistan government. These aren’t the usual releases. Whoever created them, gives collectors a lot of background information on the issues. This makes them collectable in their own right and an excellent companion piece to each stamp. Kudos to Pakistan Post.

Postmarks & Graphic Covers

Only one FDC has been released as of July, so if you are a cancel collector, Pakistan is slim pickings. They do issue a graphic cover for each stamp. Ideally, you can get a cover stamped the day it was released. That is as close to a FDC as you’ll get.
