Crypto Stamp Catalogue

Crypto Stamp Catalogue

Crypto Stamps represent a new and confusing philatelic study area. Entering the stamp scene in 2019, cryptos are slowly being issued by post offices in a handful of countries. It’s rare to have a new stamp field to explore so cataloguing them is going be be a bit of a challenging experiment. I’m including Gibraltar’s 2018 Crypto Currency stamp in this list, although strictly speaking, it may not be a crypto stamp.  The 2019 Austrian Unicorn is generally considered the first crypto stamp to be issued. But, I think Gibraltar’s 2018 issue should be included.

So, what is a crypto stamp? Best description that I can offer is, it’s an authentic stamp issued by a post office. It has a “digital twin” that has an NFC tag or chip that contains a crypto key. Some of the digital images are a mystery, until scanned. The companion digital images are categorized as commons, rares and in the case of Gibraltar, mythical rares, which determines their collectable value. The practical use of these stamps is to create a “chain of custody” for parcels and covers. Once scanned, the sender can trace every stage the parcel goes through.  It’ll be interesting to see the pricing differences between used and mint crypto stamps evolve.

So far, Austria has taken the creative lead in designing crypto stamps. They have issued 4 sets since 2019, using animal motifs in various colours. For clarity sake, Austria’s numbering system is applied to all stamps listed below. So, they will be 1.0, 2.0, 2.1 etc. with 1 being the first year of issue. If more than one set comes out in a year, they’ll be labeled with a 2.1, 2.2 numbering.

Cancels, FDCs & misc stuff

There are a few special cancels and FDCs available to collectors. When possible, I’ve included scans of any available.

If you have any tips or leads on new crypto’s issued by postal authorities, or have captures of the digital images to share, let me know in the comments.  And, what do you think about the 2018 Gibraltar issue? Leave it? Or give it an honorary mention in a footnote?
