Ohh! Hong Kong’s 2022 stamps!

Ohh! Hong Kong’s 2022 stamps!

Oh yes, Local Snacks are back for a second year! I can’t resist food on stamps and Local Snacks was one of the best designs from Hong Kong for 2021. This year, designer Shirman Lai takes over with 6 more favourites to temp us, including siu mai and  black sesame rolls. Lai created the March and May 2021 sets, Classical Novels of Chinese Literature – Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Hong Kong Museums Collection.

And now for the stamps we’ve all been waiting for. Okay, maybe not all of us, but certainly I’ve been waiting for months for the Year of the Tiger.  Designer Kan Tai-Keung returns for the annual Lunar New Year stamps. This year’s theme offers all sorts of opportunities to create both fierce and adorable stamps. 2022 is going to be a great year for cat lovers. What more can we ask for? Well, Hong Kong has given us a tiger kitten in an embroidered hat. Beat that world.

Denmark’s 2022 stamp program

Denmark’s 2022 stamp program

It’s never too soon to check out next year’s stamp programs. So, let’s enjoy Denmark’s 2022 offerings.

Their issuing program is traditionally very small, but interesting.  2021 started off with mouth watering deserts from the Danish cooking show Den Store Bagedyst. As fun as it was, it wasn’t the year’s star. That honour went to Bertil Skov Jørgensen’s Golden Age – Danish history of innovation and work 1800-1850 .  Jørgensen captured a classic feel to the set and it was a standout for it’s historical content.

Golden Age - Danish history of innovation and work 1800-1850 old train engine Golden Age - Danish history of innovation and work 1800-1850 city street Golden Age - Danish history of innovation and work 1800-1850 dancing Golden Age - Danish history of innovation and work 1800-1850

“The stamps presents examples of the numerous discoveries and works from that period of the Danish history (around 1800-1850) that came to play a key role in the country´s society and self-image.” PostNord butik

Denmark’s 2022 stamps begin the year with a charming set of Proverbs.  I’ve tried to translate the titles, but the only one I had any success with is “When the cat is away, the mice will play”, which awkwardly translated to “when the cat is out, the mice play on the table”.  Google Translate doesn’t always come up aces, but it can be entertaining. I’ll just wait for the releases which, hopefully, will supply a proper translation.

Printing methods

One change I recently made in stamp listings is the inclusion of print types for each stamp. Denmark primarily  uses offset printing methods, with the occasional engraved stamp, such as last year’s tribute to Cz. Slania. I enjoy these fiddley details about stamp design and thought there are some who may also enjoy the information.

Offset, or lithography, is a printing process that uses printing plates (usually made of aluminum, although early plates were tin) and wet ink.  If you are trying to understand the different printing processes, this short video might help you with offset printing.

France prints a lot of engraved, or intaglio, stamps so if you’d like to learn a bit more about that process, check out my intro to France 2021. I included a brief introduction to  intaglio, along with a video that shows how it’s done.

So, off we go to 2022.  Feel free to leave a comment about the stamps, or ask a question. I may not know the answer, but I’m always up for a challenging info search.

17th century – coulas (bangle-type bracelet)

Mediterranean red coral is widely used in jewelry making. In the hollow of the neck or the wrist, in earrings or in a necklace, “red gold”, reputed to bring good luck, still knows the same craze today.

Whatever its value, a piece of jewelry tells a story. It expresses a social status, a belonging to a religion, evokes a memory. This “memorial sign”, as Jean-Jacques Rousseau called it, is often part of a regional tradition.
In the 18th century, in the Arles region, future brides were offered the “coulas”, a bangle-type bracelet, in gold or silver, holding a chiseled medal. The coquetry of Arlésiennes stimulates the local silversmiths who compete in their know-how. The privileged relationship between Arles and the Order of Malta inspired them with sumptuous adornments. They revisit in particular the enamelled Maltese cross set with a diamond, to which they add a pendant in the shape of a teardrop.
A Latin cross for faith, an anchor for hope, a heart for charity, the Camargue cross created in 1926, whose ends recall the tridents of the gardians, has become the symbol of the Camargue soul.

Understanding the symbolism and importance of Marianne

Marianne is present everywhere in France and holds a place of honor in town halls and law courts. She symbolizes the “Triumph of the Republic”, a bronze sculpture overlooking Place de la Nation in Paris. Her profile stands out on the official seal of the country. It is engraved on coins and drawn on stamps and banknotes. Marianne is considered as the most prominent depiction of the French Republic.

But who is this woman, presented, by the artist Daumier, as a mother nursing two children, or, by the sculptor Rude, as an angry warrior voicing the Marseillaise on the Arc de Triomphe, or, by the painter Delacroix, as representing Liberty leading the people on the barricades, and where does she come from? One thing is certain. Her image never leaves the French indifferent. In the last two wars, certain people worshipped her just like a saint. Others, who were anti-Republican, often dragged her name through the mud.

Why is it a woman and not a man who represents the Republic? One could find the answer to this question in the traditions and mentality of the French, suggests the historian Maurice Agulhon, who set out on a real police investigation to discover the origins of Marianne which have remainded mysterious.

To begin with, why the name? Why Marianne rather than Françoise, Mireille or Madeleine? Some people believed it came from the name of the Jesuit Mariana, the 16th century theoretician. Others thought it was the image of the wife of the politician Jean Reubell, basing their belief on an old date.

According to the story, it appears that in 1797 when seeking a pleasant name of the Republic, Barras, one of the members of the Directoire, during an evening spent at Reubell’s, asked his hostess’s name; “Marie-Anne,” she replied. “Perfect,” Barras exclaimed. “It is a short and simple name which befits the Republic just as much as yourself, Madame.”

This anecdote contradicts a recent discovery which established that the fist written mention of the name of Marianne to designate the Republic appeared in October 1792 in Puylaurens in the Tarn department near Toulouse. At that time, people used to sing a song in the Provençal dialect by the poet Guillaume Lavabre: “La guérison de Marianne” (Marianne’s recovery). Interesting backstory to this series:

Already well known on coins, the Semeuse line appears on stamps of common use in 1903 and will reign for twenty years before making a return in 1960. It will be found again for its centenary in 2003 and for the 3rd anniversary of the green letter in 2014. This is a fun celebration of boxes designed to store stamps. To my knowledge, this is the first time any postal service has issued a stamp celebrating decorative stamp storage boxes. La Poste supplied a bit of info on the history of stamp boxes:

The first stamp boxes appeared around 1840 in Great Britain and became widespread around 1880 in various countries including France.
They are made of different materials, wood, brass, silver, gold, crystal, porcelain and also bakelite, papier-mâché, etc …
They often take various forms, such as envelopes, boxes with one or more compartments, with multiple decorations: stamps, drawings, shape of animals, … They are sometimes for several uses, storage, stamp humidifier, spring dispenser, letter scales or even with a paper cutter or blotting stamp. 1521 Christmas tree tradition – Sélestat 2021
The City of Sélestat, a humanist city in the heart of Alsace, carefully preserves in its municipal archives a register of accounts where it is reported that in 1521, it was necessary to pay the forest guards 4 schillings so that they watch over the corn* from St. Thomas, once celebrated on December 21, three days before Christmas. This is the oldest known handwritten mention to date referring to this part of the Christmas tree tradition.
1521 Christmas tree tradition – Sélestat 2021 | The ink square (lecarredencre.fr)

The decorative balls in the image are explained by the city of Sélestat:

After several tracks considered, it is the visual of the chandelier in Meisenthal balls that was retained. “Like a chandelier” is a pendant lamp composed of 173 Christmas balls in Meisenthal glass, created and designed by the City of Sélestat in partnership with the International Center of Glass Art of Meisenthal. This chandelier is visible every year in December in the Romanesque church of Sainte-Foy (12th century) in Sélestat. Suspended in the crossing of the transept, the balls with multiple colors come in counterpoint to the stained glass windows, recreating the shape of a fir tree that the light comes to animate. Monaco 2021 stamps

Monaco 2021 stamps

Some of the designers and engravers who worked on the Monaco 2021 stamps may be familiar to some readers. Design luminaires Elsa Catelin, Sophie Beaujard, Martin Mörck and the grandmaster of French engraving Pierre Albuisson made appearances throughout the year. It’s always exciting to see high quality engraving pop up. As you can tell, I’m a huge fan of intaglio stamps, so Monaco was a bit of a treat for my eyes.

Joining them is designer I came across earlier in the year, Russian artist/sculpture Elena Zaïka. She started Monaco’s year off with two stamps celebrating famous clowns. Although I’m one of those who never quite “got” clowns, I think Zaïka’s Yuri Nikulin Centenary stamp is a powerhouse filled with vibrant colours and tradition. It’s a great tribute to this still popular and much loved figure.

Car enthusiasts have some interesting stamps as well.  The annual Legendary Racing Cars set features the work of two well known automotive artists, Fabrice Monaci and Michel Verrando. I’ve included links to more of their works below. The second offering is part of the Movies Filmed in Monaco series – The Infernal Circle,  Henry Hathaway’s 1955 film about race car drivers. Ok, not a great view of the cars, but a good collectable.

The immensely popular EUROPA’s annual is here too. The 2021 topic Endangered National Wildlife  produced a great year of stamps. You can see all of them on Europa page

First Day Covers & cancels

I have to confess, I find Monaco’s covers disappointing. The same generic cover is used over and over, with no tie to the actual theme.  I think I’ve been spoilt by Serbia’s  magnificent covers including my favourite of the year, the Petar Manojlović dragon postcard FDC. Serbian artists use the entire envelope as their canvas so the FDC contributes to the overall theme. Unfortunately Monaco’s covers seem to be a bit of an afterthought.  Check out the Serbian cover 2021 Serbian stamps – a visual feast and skip down to the Stamp Day issue and let me know what you think.

Monaco is redeemed by their cancels.  FDCs are graced with some decent postmarks that, although not highly detailed, are still very collectable.

So, grab your espresso, settle in and enjoy a trip to Monaco through their stamps.
