2022 Slovensko stamps are here!

Written by catpaw

September 19, 2022

The 2022 Slovensko stamps are here! When I posted the 2021 season a few weeks back, I promised a quick follow up with the latest releases. To be honest, I could hardly wait to return to Slovensko. It’s been an epic adventure exploring the new artists, engravers, history and culture.

Note: for consistency sake, I’ve tried to use Slovensko rather than Slovakia throughout the article. I get easily confused when writing so I try not to switch between spellings and translations. All my bookmarks say Slovensko and most of my resources are in Slovak, so it was just easier to use Slovensko.

Slovensko started their program with an interesting Year of the Tiger and Olympic pairing. These themes don’t normally lend themselves to a single issue. But, considering it was both the Beijing Olympics and the Chinese New Year, it makes a lot of sense combining them. The stamps need to be side by side to appreciate the full design.

Slovensko Year of the Tiger, Olympics 2022 Slovensko stampsXXIV Olympic Winter Games, Beijing 2022

It’s a nice twist on two special events. Designers, Marian Komáček and Igor Piačka coordinated their efforts to create this dynamic set. To add that special something to the issue, Slovensko Post tapped legendary engraver František Horniak to create the artwork for one of the covers.

František Horniak

The hockey player must have brought Slovensko’s team some good luck because they won a bronze medal!

Engraving fans should be further excited with 2022. Slovensko presents a surprising depth of engraved art for collectors with artists like Jozef Česla and Rudolf Cigánik. They both contributed some of the finest engravings (worldwide) with exquisitely detailed works on both stamps and covers:

FDC100th anniversary of the Zemská firefighting unity in Slovakia closeup 200th anniversary of the birth of important personalities of the Štúr generation 200th anniversary of the birth of important personalities of the Štúr generation

Once again, I went a bit overboard with details, and I hope you have as much fun reading this article as I did researching it.

And hang on to your hats – I have the 2023 program outlined and have begun prepping it for release in October. It’s never too early to get a jump on next year’s stamps.

Enjoy!

For the 2022 Winter Olympics at Beijing & Lunar New Year

P. M. Bohun was a Slovak painter known primarily for his portraits.

Peter Michal Bohúň excelled as a portrait painter who mastered and enhanced the technique of the Levoča painter Jozef Caucik. He painted realistically, with attention to detail and harmonious color, and with classical chamber composition. Among the highlights of his work is the tempera sketch Slovak People’s Assembly with dozens of characters in costumes from different regions of Slovakia. He portraited many personalities of that time, including the leaders of the Slovak nation in the revolutionary boil of 1848–49. Bohúňova’s well-known paintings include a portrait of the Slovak national builder Ján Francisci – Rimavský in the uniform of the captain of Slovak volunteers. A classic of Slovak fine art of the 19th century.

One of the 2022 Christmas stamps features another of Bohun’s works.

Journalist, and writer of children’s books.

Jarunková is undoubtedly one of the world`s most significant authors of books for children and youngsters. She is the most frequently translated Slovak writer. Her books appeal not only to her young readers but also to their parents. She came up with a new method of writing by making young people the subjects, not just objects of her books. She often uses narration in the first person or quotations from diaries while keeping her distance as an author. Person – Klára Jarunková | Literárne informačné centrum (litcentrum.sk)

This year marks the bicentennial of the birth of up to five personalities of the Štúr generation, who fundamentally entered Slovak social life and left a lasting and indelible mark on it. According to his date of birth, on April 24, it was Janko Kráľ, perhaps the greatest poet of the Štúr generation, a tempestuous and revolutionary; a few days later, on April 27, Ján Palárik, a Catholic priest, was born, the opposite of Janko Kráľ, who, through his spiritual work and literature, tried to find a way to the friendly coexistence of individual nationalities of the then Kingdom of Hungary; on June 1, Ján Francisci-Rimavský came into the world, who unforgettably entered the revolutionary struggles in the revolution of 1848-1849, but also as a convener and organizer of the Memorandum Assembly of 1861; about two months later, on August 10, Ján Kalinčiak, a gifted literate who has been entertaining Slovak readers with his humoresque Restaurant for more than 150 years, saw the light of day; and finally, on December 22, Štefan Marko Daxner, a lawyer, the main creator of the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation of 1861, was born, where the basic political requirements towards Slovak self-government were enshrined, which were the content of the political programs of Slovaks until 1993. Devinophoca claytoni & gastropod Vexillum svagrovskyi

Devínska Kobyla Hill (514 m) forms the southeastern tip of the Little Carpathians and is an exceptional area with numerous paleontological sites. One of them is the important paleontological site of Bonanza, which is located on the northern edge of Devínská Kobyla, between Dúbravka and Devínská Nová Ves. The site is represented by a crack in the Mesozoic limestones, which is filled with marine sediments of the younger Tertiary – the Miocene. POFIS – Catalog – Products – Nature protection: Significant Slovak fossils – Devinophoca claytoni seal

… Konopiská near Rohožník is one of the important deposits of Slovakia with the occurrence of fossil marine fauna of the Tertiary period. The site is represented by the former mining pit of the clayey and its surroundings located south of the village of Rohožník situated on the eastern edge of the Záhorská lowland. Marine clays, sands, sandy clays and algal marl were uncovered in the clayey, containing the rich fossil sea fauna of invertebrates and vertebrates. We classify them in the younger Tertiary period – the Miocene, when about 13 million years ago sedimentation took place in the shallow-water to deep-water marine environments on the eastern edge of the Vienna Basin, which at that time represented one of the bays of the sea called central Paratethys.
