February 1, 2022 starts the Year of the Tiger and we can look forward to some stunning stamps. I’ve been waiting all year for this catstravaganza! Yes, my little cat sole is so excited. The Lunar New Year seems to bring out the best designs from around the world and I suspect this year’s tiger theme will not disappoint.
Keep in mind, this is a work in progress. There is no tight schedule for any of the tiger releases. You’ll have to keep coming back to see any new additions. The last Ox stamp from 2021, didn’t make an appearance until November, so this is a year long project. Not that I’m complaining. I already love what I’m seeing.
So, enjoy the Year of the Tiger. It’s going to be a good year for cat fans. If you’d like to receive notification when new stamps are posted to this page, sign up for my newsletter. (Use the handy box on the home page). Newsletters go out Sunday evening eastern standard time.
Cheers,
Catpaw

… Feng has been drawing tigers since he was young. At that time, due to lack of publications, he often took bus to a zoo for observation and had narrowly escaped from tigers several times. He is a national first-class painter, an expert enjoying the special allowance of the State Council and also the president of the Artists Association in Liaoning Province.
“Animals also have happiness and sorrow, so the painting of the tiger needs to break the code, break through its animal nature to convey a spiritual emotion,” Feng said. “Paying attention to portraying the spirits of the tiger also coincides with the cultural connotation of the zodiac tiger.” Zodiac stamps for Year of Tiger spark controversy for lacking vigor, strength – Global Times
Designer: Feng Dazhong
Feng’s art name is ‘”Fuhu Caotang Zhuren” (the owner of the crouching tiger humble cottage)’
According to Feng, if the picture you paint is not to convey the life felt by the painter then it is purely a game of ink. What he wants to convey is not the exquisite brushwork but real life and his own feelings. The relationship between man and nature is what Chinese art wants to convey, and the painter sets up the channel for dialogue between one’s mind and nature. Feng’s landscape painting does not pursue the extraordinary form but hides in the environment, and this is the so-called “unity of heaven and man,” the core of Chinese traditional culture.
Chinese artist Feng Dazhong combines elaborate and impressionistic styles, tradition and innovation in his landscape and bird-and-flower paintings – Global Times

“It has been so long since the memory of men remembers it, the Jade Emperor, in the kingdom of Heaven, decided to organize a race between all the animals.”
This legend has it that the first three to arrive were the rat, by cunning, the buffalo, by its power and, finally, the third was the tiger who crossed the river – the last obstacle – and arrived, exhausted, at the feet of the Emperor. Admiring, the sovereign granted him the third place in the Chinese calendar. Chinese New Year – Year of the Tiger | The ink square (lecarredencre.fr)

Kyosen Kawasaki
Yamashina Bishamon-do Majo Papier-mache Tiger Face
From the drawings (toy paintings) of local toys drawn by Kawasaki Kyosen (1877-1942), we are looking at each one in the life of next year’s Eboshi Eshi and the [Lunar New Year – Year of the Tiger].
Born in 1877 in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Kawasaki Kyosen worked as a gatekeeper for ukiyo-e artist Yoshinoki Nakai before turning into a design artist who produced commercial advertisements and newspaper advertisements. After that, he made a () () () living by collecting local toys and collecting shu by distributing works depicting local toys (toy paintings) from the end of the Meiji era to the early Showa period. The sketchbook of the brushstrokes left by Kyosen (“Toy Book” and “Kyosen Toy Book”) was donated to the Nakanoshima Library in Osaka Prefecture and preserved as the “Mermaid Cave Library”.
There are more than 5,000 kinds of toys taken up in the giant spring, and it is valuable as a material for local toys that are gradually disappearing with the times.

Year of the Black Tiger
2 stamps, souvenir sheet of 4, sheet of 16, cancel
From the myth of Dangun to Hodori, the mascot of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the tiger has historically been a symbol of Korea and the Korean people. Since ancient times, there have been many tigers in Korea, so it has been called ‘the country of tigers’. In folk tales and myths, tigers appear as beings living in close relationships with humans. In <Samguksagi>, a tiger is portrayed as the protector and helper of the hero who nursed Gyeon Hwon, the founder of Later Baekje. You can also find the appearance of a tiger in the field of art. A lagoon (a stone tiger) was placed in the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and <Yonghodo> was hung in front of the gates of government offices in the late Joseon Dynasty. <Yonghodo> is a large painting with a large tiger in it, and it is presumed to be a Sehwa (a painting that means blessing the new year). As such, the tiger has been portrayed as a guardian animal since ancient times and has been considered sacred by our people.

Catpaw, this page is incredible. I went poking around online when I was compiling my Year of the Tiger Twitter thread and I didn’t find half of these. (I even went looking specifically for some of these countries, but failed!) Must improve my searching skills… or simply defer to the king! Just gave it a plug on my Twitter and backed the heck out of the jungle. 😀
Hey PUNK!
I lurk around your page all the time. But I will accept your accolades! LOL.
