Discovering 2021 stamps from Latvia

Written by catpaw

August 04, 2021

I wasn’t sure where to start with the 2021 stamps from Latvia. Artist Ģirts Grīva designed many of the stamps, and I found myself spending more and more time trying to find decent articles on him. One of the frustrating things about being monolingual, is the need to rely on wonky computer translations. This means, I don’t share much of the material I find because I can’t offer a decent translation or worse, I’m unsure as to the reliability of the information.

Grīva’s stamp design style is hard to pin down. He seems to be able to shift between fun & whimsical like the 2021 Hockey championships to serious historical content in one season.

That’s a hard trick to pull off. I can usually spot specific artists’ work, but with him, well, he’s a tricky one. I did find this article Exhibition by Latvian stamp designer Ģirts Grīva has been opened in the stand. VIDEO – Jauns.lv. If you have any details on any of the designers, and reliable links I’d appreciate it if you drop a link & comment below or send it on to me at [email protected]

Something for budding philatelists

Latvia Post does something that post offices around the world should copy; they publish a stamp colouring book. Details are a bit vague as to how many pages, but you really can’t beat a colouring book for € 2.00. I suspect it’s something many adult collectors would have fun with as well.

Stamp colouring book for € 2.00 2021 stamps from Latvia

This is a brilliant idea & I’m tempted to order it for myself. It would be fun during long, cold winter evenings. Yea, the more I think of this, the more excited I get. Oh good grief, it really doesn’t take much to make me happy. Some pencils, a colouring book a few stamps & espresso. Perfect.

Cancel Hounds get something too

Latvia issues attractive cancels. Unfortunately, the post office site doesn’t offer clean copies for me to put up. That’s a big harumph from me. It’s a shame. Take a look at the exquisite Historical ships of the 19th century cancel by Elita Viliama.

Elita Viliama's Historical Ships cancel showing a tall ship with rope as the decoration around the silhouette

Not a very good copy, but, you get the point. It’s a stunner of a cancel.  I’m currently working on creating larger images to post. The first successful one is the Aug. Porcelain Museum cancel. In the meantime, each FDC will have the postmarks.

Let’s get started!

The Gladiola is a protected plant in Latvia and has become very rare.

Ģirts Strazdiņš, CEO of the Latvian Fund for Nature, points out: “The shingled gladiolus is one of the symbols of Latvia’s natural meadows, so we are very pleased that this protected and rare plant is reflected in the postage stamp and will carry part of the beauty of natural meadows both in Latvia and out into the world. However, natural meadows are also one of the natural values of Latvia that is currently disappearing – they have preserved only in 0.7% of the area, and their disappearance also leads to the loss of outstanding natural diversity common to these habitats. Therefore, the new stamp is a call to manage and preserve natural meadows, which are also part of Latvia’s identity.” The most recent stamp released by Latvijas Pasts features the shingled gladiolus, a rare and beautiful meadow flower

The composition of the postage stamp is made by including art objects created in riga porcelain production plants, which are currently stored in the Riga Porcelain Museum and are part of the National Museum Collection: decorative vase “Song Festival” (author of form and painting Zina Ulste, 1973, metal forging Kārlis Werner, 2003), service “People” (form author Jēkabs Bīne, 1936, 1937, paintwriter Mirdza Jurča, 1958), decorative plate (painted by Beatrice Kārkliņa) , in the early 1990s, 1990s and 1990s, 50s) and candlestler “Ilga” (shape and painting author Ilga Vanaga, 1969).

The envelope shows the set of spice dishes “Rotaļa” created in 1966 by the artist of the Riga Porcelain Factory Beatrice Kārkliņa and its production equipment: shapes, models, mouthguards – the following industrial cultural evidence is preserved in the collection of the Riga Porcelain Museum.

In turn, the first day’s stamp uses the silhouette of the coffee service “Laima”. The service “Laima” in both tea and coffee version was one of the first great design tasks of the then young artist Zinai Ulste, who in 1953 had become the main artist of the Riga Porcelain Factory.
