What can we expect for Åland stamps 2021? Although not a prolific issuer, they always produce attractive stamps to collect. Åland is part of Finland but the island is Swedish speaking, so I’ve attempted to include Finnish, Swedish, and English in the descriptions (in that order). As usual, if you spot translation errors or a misplaced accent, please let me know.

1700S NAUTICAL CHART SHOWS HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT ÅLAND HARBOUR
Located by the Åland Sea approx.10 nautical miles off Mariehamn, Rödhamn is familiar to all seafarers who have used the waterways between Finland and Sweden. Protected from all types of weather and with a muddy sea bottom for good anchoring, it has, for centuries, been a safe harbour for galleasses, sloops, yachts, Swedish warships, and Russian galleys before crossing the open sea. Today, pleasure crafts jostle in the harbour.

Great Northern War 300 years

… commemorates the 300th anniversary of the Great Northern War, one of the worst disasters to strike Åland. The stamp visualises the mass exodus and return to Åland. The islands were occupied by Russia in 1714, and the islanders fled to Sweden. After the peace treaty in 1721, most Ålanders returned to the devastated and fire-damaged island.
