postcard
pre-stamped postcard, cancel
The Krzemionki mines were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019.
Located in the mountain region of Świętokrzyskie, Krzemionki is an ensemble of four mining sites, dating from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age (about 3900 to 1600 BCE), dedicated to the extraction and processing of striped flint, which was mainly used for axe-making. With its underground mining structures, flint workshops and some 4,000 shafts and pits, the property features one of the most comprehensive prehistoric underground flint extraction and processing systems identified to date. Krzemionki Prehistoric Striped Flint Mining Region – UNESCO World Heritage Centre
Neolithic Flint Mines – Historical and Archaeological Museum in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski (muzeumostrowiec.pl) is a treasure trove of information on the site as well as the Neolithic period. In Polish, so use Google Translate. Translates well.

obwarzanek krakowski
This braided bread was given Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the European Commission in 2010. It recognises the bread’s historic and cultural importance to Krakow with the designation restricted to bakers in Krakow or Krakow and Wieliczka counties.
The name “obwarzanek” refers to its production process and derives from “obwarzać” (to parboil), a distinctive technique of boiling the dough. The Latin names, circulis and circinellos, refer in turn to the obwarzanek’s round shape.
The production of the obwarzanki (plural of obwarzanek) is traditionally done by bakers. At first, they had been baked only during Lent. In 13th century the bakers’ guild was created in Krakow. Back then, the obwarzanki could only be made inside the city walls by specific bakers who were allowed to sell them in the bakery stalls around Sukiennice on the Main Market. The production and selling of the obwarzanki had been carefully monitored by the members of the guild back then, but it’s likely that from the mid-19th century any baker could make them. Up until the 1950s, the obwarzanki were sold from linen-lined wicker baskets. What is obwarzanek krakowski – Muzeum (muzeumobwarzanka.com)
And yes, that link above is to a museum devoted to the very tasty bread. This brief video is in English and explains what makes the bread unique and how it is made.

Janusz Korczak (@1878 – 1942) an outstanding pedagogue, doctor, social activist
Postcard

In late July 1942, German authorities began the mass deportation of hundreds of thousands of Jews from the Warsaw ghetto to their deaths at the Treblinka killing center. Korczak’s Polish friends outside of the ghetto offered to help him escape the deportations by hiding him or providing him with false identity documents. Korczak would not consider leaving, however. He and his staff decided they would not attempt to save themselves. Rather, they would continue taking care of the children for as long as they possible could.
In early August 1942, German authorities deported the residents of all children’s homes within the Warsaw ghetto. On the morning of August 5 or 6, German police suddenly arrived and ordered Korczak’s staff to evacuate their building. Korczak, Wilczyńska, and the rest of the small staff quickly assembled the children outside. With their dedicated caretakers assisting them, nearly two hundred children walked through the crowded streets of the ghetto to the Umschlagplatz (deportation site). Korczak and the staff tried to keep the children from panicking. Witness accounts describe the group’s march through the ghetto as orderly and dignified.

Henryk Wieniawski occupies a special place in the history of world violin music. A genius virtuoso-violinist, he was, above all, considered by contemporary critics and music lovers alike a reincarnation of Niccolò Paganini. A composer, whose works have withstood the test of time, to take a prominent place in world violin literature and in the repertories of most eminent artists. An educator at two outstanding European schools of music. Finally, a fascinating individual of colourful personality. International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition 2022 | GFPA

St Grigol Peradze, the Holy Hieromartyr in Auschwitz, 1942 – DocsLib
When the German army invaded Poland in 1939 he expressed solidarity with Jews who were targeted by the antisemitic policies of the Nazis. Details have been hard to uncover, but Gestapo evidence related to his arrest indicated that he was involved handling funds that were given to assist Jews in getting out of occupied Poland. His activities had brought him under suspicion by the Gestapo, and he was arrested May 4, 1942 for sheltering and aiding Jews and other targets of Nazi persecution.
Father Peradze was first sent to prison in Warsaw and later transferred to the Auschwitz concentration camp. On December 6th a German officer at Auschwitz was killed. The Nazi camp officials made all the men in that part of the camp stand naked in the cold until the killer confessed. Peradze stepped forward to save all those suffering in the sub-freezing conditions. The guards set dogs on him, then poured gasoline on him and set him afire.

Mikołów
1 stamp, FDC, cancel, sheets of 12
offset
Mikołów is a town in Silesia, south Poland. It was first mentioned in written records in 1222. According to the city’s website, the current spelling of the name dates to around the 1760s.
The name of the town comes from the name Mikołaj [Nicholas]. However the town is not named after St. Nicholas but rather Mikoła or Mikuła which is probably the name of one of its former owners. The name Mikułów prevailed until the 19th century but the spelling changed over time -Miculow, Mikulow, Nicolaw, Mikulau…
The present name – Mikołów, dates back to 1760, and was spelled in a number of ways, especially that from the 2nd half of 18th century Prussian authorities restricted the use of Polish. History of Mikołów – Gmina Mikołów (mikolow.eu)
