Tokyo Olympics stamps for 2020/21

Written by catpaw

September 08, 2021

Tokyo Olympics stamps were scattered over a 2 year period, thanks to the pandemic postponement. The Olympics are alternately labeled 2020 and 2021. For clarity, I tried to use 2020 throughout this article. In about 40 years, I’ll bet there will be mild confusion among novice collectors about the dating shift.

When possible, I’ve included details about the stamp design and the designers. I was lucky to find quite a bit of info.  One of the fascinating components of stamp collecting is watching designers expand their portfolio and watch their work progress.  A couple of interesting artists were tapped for this series. One of the most interesting is Kumiyonoe, a Luxembourg based manga artists. Her manga style is reflected in the Luxembourg stamp.  It’s definitely the most unique offering in the series.

Tokyo Olympic stamp

What didn’t make the cut

Some countries issued Olympic themed stamps but had no reference or direct connection to the Tokyo Olympics. 205 countries competed in the 2020 Olympics, with 40 countries issuing stamps to celebrate the event. Because of the sheer volume of stamps issued, I made a decision to not include any that didn’t connect directly to the Tokyo games. I may change my mind and come back and add a them, but I for this round, I wanted to focus on Tokyo.

Best of the Tokyo Olympics stamps

Favourite set hands down is Bermuda. Andrew Robinson’s eye catching design pops with energy. Love the set. (2 more stamps below)

Bahamas Olympics stamp Bahamas Olympics stamp two Bahamas Olympics stamp three

Runner up is Lithuania with their smart use of stylized athletes mimicking Japanese characters.  I scrolled up and down this article more times than I care to remember and each time, this stamp stood out. I never tire of looking at it.

XXXII Olympic Games  Release date: July 23, 2021

Best cancel definitely belongs to Uruguay. I was underwhelmed with many of the cancels for this series, but Alejandro Muntz’s design is a winner. Although very busy, it works because of the sharpness of the artwork.

Uruguay cancel for 2020 Olympics

I’m sure I’ve missed a few that should be included. I’ll keep looking at the 2020/2021 stamps and find any I’ve left off the list. The Philippines post office should be issuing a stamp celebrating the historic gold medal win by Hidilyn Diaz. When they issue the stamp, it’ll make it’s way to this page.

Leave a comment below and tell everyone which is your favourite.

  1. You have done an outstanding job putting all of this together — it is really well done – an extraordinary effort and so useful for those interested in Olympic Games stamps and postmarks – but also valuable to those who specialize in one sport. A lot of baseball stamp collectors will find this very helpful.
My own personal preferences — the person that designed Azerbaijan’s stamps had a great idea — the sport artwork is creatively cropped but the big red dot representing the Japanese flag is intrusive. The US stamps are colourful — and the baseball stamps is really terrific. The sylized images used by the Romanian designer work well — especially the ping pong player. Thanks so much for this … I am new to the site. Looking forward to more stamp news.

    • Hey Irv,

Azerbaijan has blown me away with their designs. I can’t help but feel like I’ve missed so much by focusing on Canadian stamps for so long.
And thank you for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it.

  2. Can you give me a list of stamp that were issued by countries that did not participate in the 2020 games.
    Thanks

    • I’ll check my list and see if I can pull that up.

    • Hey John,
I’ve attached a pdf spreadsheet I used to keep straight. I think one might be missing. If it is, I’ll update the spreadsheet and repost next week. All the countries I listed participated in the Olympics.
There were some stamps issued with an Olympic theme, but not strictly speaking the Tokyo Olympics. I haven’t included them here.
