September brought a sketch of the University of Ferrara’s Botanical Gardens and a treat for those of us interested in stamp designers. The “Orto Botanico dell’Università di Ferrara” stamp is a young artist’s first design for Poste Italiane.Â

For the Natural and Landscape Heritage series
The Botanical Garden of Ferrara is 250 years old: it was 1771 when the University of Ferrara had the opportunity to establish … the Botanical Garden, … thus establishing itself among the oldest gardens in Italy. In celebration of the 250th anniversary …, the University Garden of Ferrara has launched a rich series of events and collaborations with the city to promote its valuable scientific and cultural contribution to the territory. The Botanical Garden of Ferrara celebrates its 250th anniversary
One of the collaborations undertaken to celebrate this anniversary, was with Dosso Dossi high school. Student Emanuele Benini is the talent behind the sketch. Five students, under the direction of Prof. E. Idone (Figurative Arts class) submitted concept art for the stamp design. Benini’s sketch of the inside of one of the greenhouses was picked. Not only does it appear on a stamp, but also on a postcard, souvenir folder, info bulletin and a fabulous philately card.Â

No FDC was issued for general release, but a great postcard can be purchased instead. It has both Bellini’s stamp and Palmonari’s logo, so you get two for the price of one. I think the post office missed a great opportunity by not having the postcard available with both artists’ signatures. Â

If you are a collector of covers, get the tri-fold brochure. It contains a postcard, single stamp and block of stamps. It also has a cover that hasn’t been released for single purchase. I checked the Poste Italiane’s website a number of times to see if it was an omission, but so far no FDC has appeared, so your only chance of scoring a cover is through the folder.

This type of partnership with young artists is exciting. Not only does it show off new and upcoming talent, it also exposes a young generation to the beauty of stamps. The world needs more partnerships like this.Â
