WireLurker shows iPhone vulnerabilites

For those who still believe in the myth of Apple OS invulnerability, the time to re-assess your ideas is long overdue.  For a long time, people have been warning Apple users, you aren’t immune to hacks, malware and viruses, yet the idea prevails. Wish I had a dime for every person I’ve dealt with who believed the tale of invincibility and refused to install any security.

WireLurker is the latest maleware threat directly targetting Apple devices ranging from desktops to iPhones.

The malware hops from infected computer to any Apple device plugged into it via a USB cable and seems to be monitoring and collecting information. What info and why is a bit unclear.  Like the iPhone itself, WireLurker is made in China, home of some very aggressive and robust hacking.  The original malware came from the Maiyadi App Store in China, a 3rd party vendor. An estimated 400 infected apps were on the site, which have been downloaded 350,000 times since they were listed. Hard to say how much farther the infection has spread but so far doesn’t seem to have spread outside of China.

So, I’ll tell you what I tell all my Mac customers – YOU NEED SECURITY PROTECTION. As good as an Apple device is, it’s still vulnerable.  Download and install a quality antivirus, be cautious about where you download from (especially if you have jail broken your device), be wary of any 3rd party vendors and keep your devices up to date with the latest security patches.

You can choose from a number of vendors for your Apple protection. Most have software for both desktop and mobile devices.

Top of the line, includes a free home version. Paid version is well worth upgrading to – Avast

One of the best on the market – Kaspersky
