Writing this intro to the 2022 Serbian stamp program gives me one last chance to talk about my favourite stamp of 2021. Not favourite Serbian stamp, favourite of all releases world wide. If you’ve read many of my articles, you’ve already guessed which one it is.
Yes, that wonderful winged terror Zmaj! As great as the dragon is, it’s the cover that pushes the design into a different sphere. In case you didn’t spot it, look at the brown cover carefully. The old paper stains are actually Zmaj.
Serbian designers take bland covers and turn them into an extension of the stamp. They will often use every corner of the cover as a canvas giving the viewer so much to digest. Designer Jakša Vlahović used Petar Manojlović’s original artwork and reworked it into this miniature masterpiece. The dragon is magnificent and Vlahović’s treatment of the original art is respectful.
First Serbian postcard, popularly called ”Zmaj” (Dragon), was sent by Jovan Manojlović on 19th of May 1871 from Vienna, from the editorial board of the newspaper ”Zmaj” to Sombor, to the address of a lawyer Dimitrije Manojlović. It was written in Serbian language, in Cyrillic. The postcard was printed on a cardboard of 155 mm x 105 mm format, in the coloured copper engraving technique, done by the Vienna typographer and carver Rudolf Schürer von Waldheim at the beginning of 1871. The postcard was ordered by the editorial board of the satirical newspaper ”Zmaj”, which was one of the first and the best edited humorous newspapers in Serbian language. It was the reason why its founder and editor-in-chief, poet Jovan Jovanović was nicknamed Zmaj. This satirical newspaper was founded by Jovan Jovanović in 1864, and the name ”Zmaj” is a play on words, since May 3 was the date of the May Assembly in 1848 (in Cyrillic 3. мај – Змај). Serbia Post
Serbian designers quickly moved up to be among my favourites because of this ability to take something as benign as an envelope and transform it into a full piece of art. Let’s take a look at a another example from last year.
This is a powerful and expressive piece. You don’t need words or translations to “get it”. The details on the cover, from the cancel to the citizen soldiers tell the story of the Serbian Uprising (designer Jakša Vlahović.) So when I said Serbia was the find of the year, I wasn’t exaggerating.
I’m eager to see what magic Serbian designers create this year. But I don’t think anything will ever top Zmaj. Don’t disappoint me Serbia. I’m counting on you to stay atop the design list.

First stamp – promotional poster for the first Fest from 1971
Second stamp – 50th anniversary logo for Fest 2022
50. International Film Festival, Fest 2022
50 Fest runs February 25 to March 6, 2022. The theme of the first Fest was “A Brave New World“ which premiered January 9, 1971. The first film that showed was Robert Altman’s Mash. The 50th anniversary theme is New . Brave . World . A nice play in themes and words.
The first FEST was quite spectacular, featuring “A Space Odyssey” by Stanley Kubrick; Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider“; the already mentioned “Mash” by Robert Altman; the films by Eric Rohmer, Louis Bunuel, Živojin Pavlović… Although many nostalgically, but rightfully so, consider this first edition of the Festival to be unmatched, the truth is that in the years that followed, FEST presented its audiences with many opportunities to see the films that have later been counted among the best in film history. Many illustrious international actors and directors have been the festival’s guests over the last four decades: Marcello Mastroianni, Harvey Keitel, Liv Ullman, Bernardo Bertolucci, Sophia Loren, Robert de Niro, Antonioni, Johnny Depp, Milos Forman, Catherine Deneuve, Wim Wenders, Abaz Kiarostami, Hanna Schygulla, Monica Bellucci, the above mentioned Rafelson, Schlöndorff, and Russell… a long, honourable and impressive list of names. He worked and created in America, but he always proudly pointed out his origins. During his visit to Belgrade on June 2. 1892, he was greeted with the highest honors and met with the Serbian king and the highest Serbian officials. Nikola Tesla was awarded the Royal Order of Saint Sava II degree. During his stay in Belgrade and Serbia, Nikola Tesla received great respect and admiration as a young and famous scientist of Serbian origin who raised the reputation of the entire Serbian people with his knowledge and works. Tesla’s visit to the Serbian capital significantly influenced Serbia to be one of the first countries in Europe to start electrification of the country based on Tesla’s polyphase system with the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in the city of Užice in 1900, just four years after the commissioning of the world’s first hydroelectric power plant on the Niagara River. 150 years of Serbian Philately Rarity: Milanče Tête-bêche
series: stamp day
1 stamp, FDC, cancel, sheets of 25
This stamp has an interesting history. Serbia Post’s website has the best writeup a:
… the newspaper stamp of this edition from 1872, whose nominal value is 1 Serbian penny, gave Serbian classical philately a rarity of world proportions: ”Milanče” in tête-bêche form.
The most famous Serbian philatelists, Evžen Deroko and Mirko Rašić, in their manuals, pointed out the existence of this pair in tête-bêche form. The exact circumstances that led to the formation of this pair can be speculated, but the most probable, accepted version is that this feature came about by incorrectly inserting clichés during printing. The error was soon discovered and corrected, but one copy was still preserved.
This rarity was first part of the famous Ferrary’s collection (Philipp la Renotière von Ferrary 1850–1917), which was dominated by world-class rarities. Due to the circumstances in Serbia, Ferrary almost lost his life, and later, as a sign of gratitude, he built a school building in Pirot and became a frequent guest in the kingdom and a personal friend of the King Milan. King himself has most likely gifted him with this rarity, knowing that Ferrary was a passionate philatelist. After it was sold at auction in the 1920s, nothing was known about this tête-bêche until the publication of Mirko Rašić’s book, when it was first presented to a wider audience. Пригодна издања – 2022 – еФилателија (posta.rs)
The last time a Milanče Tête-bêche went for auction, it sold for approx. $90,000 Cdn.
FDC shows a cover from Svilajnac to Paraćin. It has a block of 14 Milanče & strips. The cover is in the Predrag Antić collection.
