It’s never too soon to check out next year’s stamp programs. So, let’s enjoy Denmark’s 2022 offerings.

Their issuing program is traditionally very small, but interesting.  2021 started off with mouth watering deserts from the Danish cooking show Den Store Bagedyst. As fun as it was, it wasn’t the year’s star. That honour went to Bertil Skov Jørgensen’s Golden Age – Danish history of innovation and work 1800-1850 .  Jørgensen captured a classic feel to the set and it was a standout for it’s historical content.

Denmark’s 2022 stamps begin the year with a charming set of Proverbs.  I’ve tried to translate the titles, but the only one I had any success with is “When the cat is away, the mice will play”, which awkwardly translated to “when the cat is out, the mice play on the table”.  Google Translate doesn’t always come up aces, but it can be entertaining. I’ll just wait for the releases which, hopefully, will supply a proper translation. 

Printing methods

One change I recently made in stamp listings is the inclusion of print types for each stamp. Denmark primarily  uses offset printing methods, with the occasional engraved stamp, such as last year’s tribute to Cz. Slania. I enjoy these fiddley details about stamp design and thought there are some who may also enjoy the information. 

Offset, or lithography, is a printing process that uses printing plates (usually made of aluminum, although early plates were tin) and wet ink.  If you are trying to understand the different printing processes, this short video might help you with offset printing.

France prints a lot of engraved, or intaglio, stamps so if you’d like to learn a bit more about that process, check out my intro to France 2021. I included a brief introduction to  intaglio, along with a video that shows how it’s done.

The subterraneans of Bornholm

Bornholm folklore sometimes references “De Underjordiske”, a kind of people that live under the many ancient burial mounds that spot the landscape. Lars sometimes calls the people “subterraneans”, “pixies” or “underearthlings”. They’re known as a militant group, fiercely defending themselves, their homes in the mounds, and the island. But not an unthankful group either, rewarding humans for kindness or bravery.

The link above has a 27 min podcast interview with Lars Christian Kofoed Rømer, an anthropologist who has done extensive research on the tales of the underground of Bornholm. The interview is in English. His 2018 PhD dissertation was Tales in an Underground Landscape: Anthropological Excursions in the Danish Island of Bornholm.

Significant Women

Features 10 remarkable women from the past 150 years. 

• Nielsine Nielsen (1850 -1916) – Denmark’s first female student, first academic, first doctor
• Anne Marie Carl Nielsen (1863-1945) – sculptor. One of her works, Equestrian Statue, can be seen at the Christiansborg’s riding track
• Karen Volf (1864-1946) – entrepreneur who used her pastry chef skills to establish a her own business, Bisca, which grew into an empire. She did this in the 1920s, a time when women were not allowed to own their own business or have their own money.
• Nina Bang (1866-1928) –  politician. Bang was the first “parliamentarily elected female minister”
• Inge Lehmann (1888-1993) – seismologist. In 1936 she published her breakthrough theory that the earth’s core was not liquid, but solid.  Many scientists refused to credit her with the discovery because they refused to accept a woman could produce such scientific research. 
• Bodil Begtrup (1903-1987)  – 1st female ambassador for Denmark. During  her time at the UN, she worked tirelessly to create the Declaration of Human Rights. 
• Lis Hartel (1921-2009) – athlete, equestrian. Hartel contracted polio at 23 and had lifelong mobility issues as a result. She went on to become one of the elite athletes in equestrian world. Won 2 silver medals, 1952 Helsinki Olympics & 1956 Stockholm Olympics. Member of the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.
• Inger Christensen (1935-2009 ) – author, poet. Her works have been translated in to 30 languages. 
• Tine Bryld (1939-2011) –  social worker. Hosted a radio show, Across, for 36 years which acted as an outreach for young people to talk about a wide range of subjects that were affecting them. Through her show, Byrld “she guided distraught young people through everything from heartbreak to incest and abortion.”
• Natasja Saad (1974-2007) – rapper, singer who became hugely influential in the hiphop and dancehall scene. As a minority and woman working in a male dominated field, she “managed to make her mark and not least pave the way for other ethnic minorities in Denmark and in Danish music”
