150 Years of the Postcard in France
1 stamp on souvenir sheet, infosheet
Photogravure
La Poste has an interesting writeup discussing this souvenir sheet which uses a copy of the original 1872 Cérès stamp with a postmark and souvenir sheet designed like the original postcard.
The first cards circulated on January 15, 1873 and met with tremendous success: in one week, 7,412,700 copies were sold.
From 1890, the postcard became the preferred medium for correspondence. Now illustrated, it benefits from the improvement of photographic reproduction techniques, the excellence of the railway and postal network that promotes its rapid distribution, the organization of the profession with the creation of a publishers’ union in 1904 and the fact that most of the population, thanks to compulsory education, can now read and write. Between 1905 and 1914, 750 million cards were sold each year in France. The card plays the role now assigned to SMS – for the rapid transmission of short messages – to television news – for the dissemination of illustrated news – and to magazines – as a reflection of society. It remains today one of the best witnesses of the France of the Belle Époque.

The image in the stamp shows a Roman empire dolia ship, La Giraglia 2, off the Cape Corsica. The ship carried large dolium, larege earthenware wine vessels.
This type of vessel was intended to transport dolia in bulk as the dolia appear to have been placed in the hold as the ship was being built. The “La Giraglia” was carrying at least eight dolia and its excavation gives insight into the ship’s design and how such vessels contributed to patterns of trade in the western Mediterranean. The cistern boat was an innovation in ship construction, intended to respond to changes in the production and transportation of wine brought about by Roman expansion. The cistern boat began being built during the Augustan Period, and continued until the 2nd century. The relatively short period of production for this ship-type suggests that there were problems with its design which caused the design to be superseded. Marcel Proust (1871 – 1922)
1 stamp, sheet of 12, cancel, philatelic souvenir
Proust is considered one of the greats of 20th c literature.
Marcel Proust, born in Paris in 1871 and died in the same city in 1922, is one of the most famous French writers in the world, author of a novel cycle in seven volumes, In Search of Lost Time. However, success did not come easily: Marcel Proust, desperate to find a publisher who accepted his first volume, Du côté de chez Swann, ended up publishing it on his own account in 1913. In 1919, the second volume, À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, won the Prix Goncourt, paving the way for success, the influence of which has continued to grow, both in France and abroad. The Familistère of Guise – Aisne
1 stamp, cancel, sheets of 15

The Familistère de Guise or “Social Palace” is a concrete utopia inspired by the phalanstery, the dream of Charles Fourier (1772-1837). Its designer is a former self-taught locksmith worker, who becomes a brilliant captain of industry, an enthusiastic Fourierist and an outstanding builder. Jean-Baptiste André Godin (1817-1888) created in 1840 a factory of cast iron stoves and stoves, he laid the first brick of the Familistère in 1858 and he founded in 1880 the Cooperative Association of Capital and Labour, in which the workers are collectively owners of the Familistère and its manufactures. It is a question of setting a successful example of an alternative to the economic and social organization of capitalist society. The Familistère de Guise – Aisne | The ink square (lecarredencre.fr)

Ada LOVELACE 1815 – 1952 computer pioneer
1 stamp, cancel
Photogravure
The First Computer Programmer (codecademy.com)
At a very young age, she began studying mathematics. [Rising} to a level sufficient to appreciate the work of a talented inventor, Charles Babbage. He has just developed an automatic calculator.
Ada looks at these complex cogs and an intuition comes to her: what if, instead of handling only numbers, this machine also dealt with symbols? She puts her intuition to the clean: it will be the famous “Note G”, published in 1843, the first computer program in the world.
Ada will never know she was awesome. She died at the age of 36 on November 27, 1852. Almost a century later, an American physicist named Howard Aiken made a machine from Babbage’s gears and Ada Lovelace’s notes: the Mark I. This one will have a large number of descendants: computers. In 1978, the NEW COMPUTER LANGUAGE OF THE US Department of Defense was named Ada. Ada Lovelace finally ceases to be just a footnote in her father’s biographies.
Ada was a strong advocate of the idea of “poetic science.” Fusing science and poetry within the same vision, she dreamed of a machine that would be able to speak previously unknown languages. She imagined computing, she pulled it out of nothingness at a time when our modernity was barely awakening. His work, a fragile flower hatched in the mists of Romanticism, rose like a sun on the second half of the XXe century and illuminates the third millennium. By giving shape to our future, Ada Lovelace has marked our civilization as much as Pasteur, Einstein or Fleming. Ada Lovelace or the Beauty of Numbers Catherine Dufour

Dewoitine D1 Fighter 1923
1 stamp, 1 sheet of 12, sheet of 10, cancel
offset/intaglio
This stamp and cancel used the illustrations by Arthur Thomas, official Air and Space painter (Ministry of the Armed Forces)
Émile Dewoitine formed his own French aircraft firm in October 1920 and went on to design a number of successful fighter aircraft between the war years (1920 to 1939), The D1 was the first one to roll off the manufacture lines in 1922. Unlike earlier aircraft, this monoplane’s fuselage was constructed with a steel skin while the single wing was made of the more traditional fabric and dope covering.
It was 7.50 m (24 ft 7.25 in) long with a wingspan of 11.50 m (37 ft 8.75 in). It was armed with 2 synchronised Vickers machine guns that fired through the propeller (as most did during WW1). It could reach up to 255 km/h (158 mph, 137 kn), with a range of 400 km (250 miles) and capable of climbing to 8000 m (26,245 feet).
