Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Gomes died September 16, 1896.
Considered the first “New World” composer to gain widespread success in Europe, with a number of his works playing at Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
Brazil has released 3 stamps in his honour.. The first set celebrates the 100th anniversary of the world premier of Il Guarany in 1870. It was his first opera to premiere at Teatro alla Scala, although two musical comedies played at the famed theatre in 1867 and 1868. It was this piece that rocketed Gomes onto the international scene.
