Brazilian revolutionary Tiradentes executed

Brazilian revolutionary Tiradentes was executed, drawn & quartered on April 21, 1792.

It was the morning of April 21, 1792, a long 229 years ago. The sun shone over the crowd as the condemned man was led through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, surrounded by troops, from the prison to the scaffold installed in Largo da Lampadosa.

He had his head and beard shaved and was covered by a coarse robe, hence a crucifix. Calmly, he climbed the steps, accompanied by the friar, who was in charge of giving him the support of prayers at the hour of death. Around him, the assembled crowd watched in dismay every second of the execution. Martyr of the Minas Gerais Conspiracy: 231 years ago, Tiradentes was executed (uol.com.br)

Tiradentes was a leader of the “Inconfidência Mineira” movement that sought to bring the ideals of the Enlightenment to the colony as well as full independence for Brazil.

“In addition to the propagation of Enlightenment ideals, the Inconfidência Mineira took place as a result of the dissatisfaction of the elites of the Captaincy of Minas Gerais with the heavy tax collection policy established by the Portuguese Crown on the colonists. The Viscount of Barbacena had been appointed by the Portuguese Crown as governor of the captaincy with the aim of promoting the derrama, that is, the mandatory collection of taxes on the extraction of gold.
