Canadian artist Jean-Paul Riopelle birth on Oct 7
Canadian artist Jean-Paul Riopelle was born October 7, 1923 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
If Riopelle is a pillar of our history, it is because he was first and foremost a visionary and an explorer, and that is precisely what made him an eminently contemporary artist. In both the past and the present, Riopelle stands, in this sense, at a crossroads in time.

Riopelle’s art has been featured twice on Canadian stamps. The first was his “Painting” from Canada Post’s Automatists of Montreal series (August 7, 1998). This was the stamp that changed my notions of art – for some reason I was stunned by the series, but especially Riopelle’s work. It set me on the road to re-evaluating my long held views of what art was. This was also the set I was never able to buy, when it was released, because the local post office didn’t have it, much to my chagrin. Maybe its time to hunt the set down.

Designer Raymond Bellemare used Riopelle’s original painting for this stamp.
The second time Riopelle appeared on stamps was Canada Post’s beautiful tribute released a year after his death.
