The 13th King of the Princely State of Mewar, now part of present-day Rajasthan, was renowned for his fierce resistance against the territorial expansions of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar. He ascended the throne when his father, Maharana Udai Singh died in 1572, despite pressure from some areas that wanted his half-brother Jagmal to be King, Udai Singh himself favoured Jagmal and declared him successor prior to his death. Nobles opted to support Udai Singh’s first-born son, Pratap SIngh.

Pratap’s reign was defined by his staunch refusal to submit to the Mughals, which culminated in the legendary Battle of Haldighati in 1576. Although outnumbered, Maharana Pratap fought valiantly against the forces of Akbar, led by generals Asaf Khan I and Raja Man Singh. Despite the battle’s inconclusive result, Pratap’s determination to protect his kingdom’s sovereignty made him an enduring icon of resistance and pride for the Rajput community and a revered figure in Indian history.
