Canadian politician Pierre Laporte kidnapped Oct 10

The kidnapping of Canadian politician Pierre Laporte, on October 10, 1970 deepened the October Crisis.

Laporte, Quebec’s Labour Minister, was kidnapped by the FLQ (Chénier Cell) five days after the British trade commissioner in Montreal was abducted. Both were held by the Front de libération du Québec, a militant, and often violent separatist group.

The FLQ was pushing a radical vision of Quebec: one that was independent from anglophone Canada and which rejected the capitalist order.

But seven years of robberies and bombings had landed dozens of its members in jail without bringing them any closer to their stated goals. So in October 1970, they switched tactics from bombing to political kidnappings. They first abducted British Trade Commissioner James Cross and then Quebec Deputy Premier Pierre Laporte.

On October 17, Laporte, weakened after being injured in a failed escape attempt, was strangled to death by his kidnappers. Instead of seeking medical help for the man, they decided it was easier to wrap a chain around his neck and murder him. They put his body in the trunk of a car and abandoned it at Montreal Saint-Hubert Longueuil Airport. Public sympathy for the FLQ dropped with the news of Laporte’s brutal murder.

The Canadian post office released a memorial stamp a year after Laporte’s murder. It was released on the 50th anniversary of his birth. It’s interesting to compare the final stamp (black and white) to the other proposed red/pink version. Both are profiles, but the black and white edition, is more sober.
