Interestingly, there is an embarrassment of Elizabeths and a dearth of Pius’ to choose from.
On Feb. 25, Pius V issued Papal Bull Regnans in Excelsis (Ruling from on High), excommunicating Elizabeth and any subjects who remained loyal to her. The Bull also absolved all of Elizabeth’s subjects from allegiance to her, basically saying she was not the rightful ruler, and they were not under any moral obligation to obey the Queen.
