The Orient Express chugs out of a Paris station on October 4th, 1883

On October 4th, 1883 the famed Orient Express pulled out Paris, bound for Constantinople, for the first time.

The round trip lasted 7 days. With this one trip, the geography of Europe was turned upside down, and the notion of long-distance travel was completely redefined.

Austria and Romania issued joint stamps in 2010 to celebrate the Orient Express. Designed by Răzvan Popescu.

One of the odder releases was North Korea’s 1984 The 100th Anniversary of the Orient Express. Celebrating a train synonymous with luxury seems anathema to everything North Korea promotes but it is an attractive stamp. There is an error on the map – North Korea used post WW2 West and East Germany on their 1883 map tracing the route.  As well, they have Czechoslovakia listed (just west of the stamp, which wasn’t created until 1918.

Last year, 2023, designers Broll and Prascida designed a souvenir sheet for France, the starting point of the Express – Orient Express, 140 Years.
