France’s 2021 stamps presented a number of problems. The first was realising I should have started earlier. Not only does France issue a large number of (excellent) stamps, I realised I have a mountain of information in my archives about French artists and engravers. I wasn’t consciously aware that I had accumulated so many links and articles about them. This post has a lot of links and videos that should help break down the various topics, who the artists are and how to find more of their works. I guess this article turned into a massive celebration of French art and design.
The second big issue was the sheer size of the article. To improve loading speed, France 2021 is broken into 2 parts. To see July to Dec go here: France 2021 philately July to Dec | Bitter Grounds Magazine. The pages are heavy with large images, which are super sizable when you click on them. La Poste offers beautiful quality scans of all stamps, cancels and info sheets. Reducing their size felt like a betrayal of their hard work. In hindsight, I should have broken this down into 3 sections. Either that or cut down on the amount of information I include. Nah, it’ll be three parts next year. Its too much fun researching French designers and engravers.
Don’t forget to look at the border art. The delicate work is easy to over look but is noteworthy for what it adds to the stamp’s theme.
Info sheets
Over the past couple months, I’ve debated about including info sheets (when offered). France puts a lot of work into each, offering rich details about stamp design, the history etc. Not every stamp has one, but when they are available, I’ve posted them.
Cancels
La Poste deserves an award for their cancel artistry. Quite honestly, I think French postmarks are among the best in the world. As much detail goes into the cancels as the stamps themselves.
Types of print
For the first time I’m listing print type for each stamp and will try to include it in articles going forward. To fully appreciate French stamps, it helps to understand the various processes used, especially engraving. Unlike many post offices, La Poste seems to be on a mission to keep engravers employed. If you are relatively new to collecting, you may not be familiar how stamps are printed. Linn’s Stamp News published a good primer in April 2021 Determining printing methods can confuse anyone (linns.com).
My favourite type of print is intaglio engraving, a process La Poste uses a lot. This little video from the Museum of Modern Art might help you understand the process a bit more, and appreciate the artistry involved in creating a “simple” postage stamp.

“The story is singular. Claire Roman was an experienced pilot, recognized, decorated with the Croix de Guerre. She did speed races, raids like the Paris-Pondicherry, obtained a pilot qualification without visibility, broke speed and altitude records, was the first female pilot of the French Air Force, was taken prisoner, escaped… And it was as a passenger – she had resumed her activity as a nurse, at the age of 35, when she was going to Pau to visit her sick mother that she died, “says Gilles Collaveri who collected testimonies near Salvezines before locating the remains. “The desire to enrich and beautify things cannot be interpreted materialistically, that is, in the sense of increasing their value as possessions; rather, it stems from the instinct for perfection and the creative act.” Sophie Taeber-Arp 1927
Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889 – 1943) is one of the most important artists of the twentieth-century avant-garde and is considered a pioneer of Constructivist art. Reconciling extremes with confidence – Dada and Geometric Abstraction, fine art and utilitarian objects – Taeuber-Arp’s works boldly engaged with the intellectual context of international modernism. Through her multi-faceted approach to media, she challenged traditional hierarchies between fine and applied art, and asserted art’s urgent relevance to daily life.
