Hop, hop, hopping into the Guernsey 2023 stamp program

by | Jan 14, 2023

The Guernsey 2023 stamp program has 14 sets laid out, including another thematic “quartet series”.  I doubt  it will be possible to top last year’s Heart of the Forest series by artist Gail Armstrong. It was worth the wait to see the entire set on a single sheet. The Guernsey 2023 stamp program has 14 sets laid out, including another thematic “quartet series”.

Forest Souvenir Sheet

The [Love Paper] campaign highlights how the paper industry depends on sustainable forest management to provide a reliable supply of wood fibre, the key raw material for paper products. It advocates that sustainable forest management plays an important role in conserving biodiversity and eco systems. Heart of the Forest, part one of the 2022 quartet series (guernseystamps.com)

While Alderney will be saying hello to the new King, Guernsey will say a last good bye to the Queen with a February celebration of Queen Elizbeth’s life. The set includes a pair of se-tenant stamps highlighting 4 royal visits to the island. This year will also see  EUROPA and SEPAC stamps, as well as Christmas and Lunar New Year sets. Australian based artist Chrissy Lau returns to start 2023 with her distinctive artwork for Guernsey’s Year of the Rabbit

There will be lots to see throughout the year, and if you’d like to receive notifications when updates are posted, sign up for my weekly newsletter. It’s the simplest way to keep up with the changes.

Designer: Jake Coates
Jake Coates was a brilliant choice for these canine illustrations. He works mostly with coloured pencil and occasionally pastels. His portfolio   includes number of dogs – although I did see a few cat images squeezed in among the woofers.

Although he started out his career as an emergency doctor, after a catastrophic loss, he gravitated towards artwork after leaving the medical field.  Coates now works full time as an artist, specialising in pets, wild life and the child portraits. He counts himself lucky to be able to pursue his passion full time.  But seriously Jake, you need more cat illustrations to balance out that dog imbalance.  ABOUT | Jake Coates Art

“The concept for the Guernsey stamps is everyone on earth being at peace with each other and they have been designed so that the symbols of peace on earth are being viewed from space.” Bridget Yabsley, head of philatelic at Guernsey Post

  • 56p: The dove has been a symbol of peace and innocence for thousands of years in many different cultures and is depicted with arms embracing the world.
  • 79p: The handshake is a symbol of friendship and harmony.
  • 87p: The astronauts are non-gender with no political/racial bias; they embrace one another to represent peace and harmony.
  • £1.21: The EUROPA winning stamp design represents and depicts the theme. It was inspired by the Celtic Love Knot symbol, with interlocking hearts. The colour palette illustrates all the nations in the world.
  • £1.39: In the 1950s, a symbol was designed for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), a group at the forefront of the peace movement in the UK. It has become an almost universal peace symbol used in many different versions worldwide.
  • £1.50: The world depicting environmental elements all living in harmony and peace.

The deal, which was made just after the Second World War, means Guernsey has to provide essential services, such as healthcare, policing and education in return for Alderney residents’ income tax.

The agreement was originally put in place as a stopgap while the islands recovered from the war, but has remained for the past 70 years.
