The 2023 U.S. stamp program has put me in a good mood today. Not only will we have fluffy bunnies, flowers, woodland animals and a big yellow school bus, we will be honoured with stamps celebrating 2 women who were giants in their fields – Toni Morrison, one of the great American authors who was seminal in forming my appreciation of African American authors and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, US Supreme Court Justice.
As expected, fan favourites return with the 50th anniversary of the LOVE stamps, Black Heritage, Lunar New Year and various looks at iconic American landscapes. Both Ethel Kessler, Antonio Alcalá and Greg Breeding return for the bulk of design duties with the 2023 program, and I think this may be their strongest year yet. But then, any program that honours Toni Morrison is a winning one.
Let’s take a quick look at the coming year.

Wildlife illustrator Dugald Stermer’s (1936-2011) pencil and water colour of a little red fox just might be the best wildlife stamp the US has issue to date. The US is traditionally strong in animal stamps, but Stermer’s artwork is simply stunning. This is one to collect.

The colour is called National School Bus Glossy Yellow and is instantly identifiable in both Canada and the US. The stamp is the collaborative work of artist Steve Wolf, art director Greg Breeding and stamp designer Mike Ryan.
And if you’re curious, the official school bus colour is hex #F5A400.

Snow may be falling outside my window, but I’m dreaming about summer thanks to my USPS Sailboat Postcard Stamps, which were just released this week! I’m still pretty awestruck that I had the chance to illustrate stamps, seeing as they’re such a ubiquitous part of daily life. Chief Standing Bear (ca. 1829-1908)
Topics: history | indigenous history
1 stamp, 2 FDCs, cancel, portfolio, sheets of 15
offset
Art director Derry Noyes designed this tribute to Chief Standing Bear, who fought and won Native Americans’ recognition as “persons under the law” with the same rights as every other person in the US. Artist Thomas Blackshear II used an original 1877 photograph of Standing Bear for the artwork.
In 1877, the U.S. Army had forcibly relocated some 700 Ponca to Indian Territory (what is now Oklahoma) after the federal government had given away the tribe’s homeland in the Niobrara River Valley in what is now northeastern Nebraska.
In a landmark civil rights case, Standing Bear v. Crook, Standing Bear sued the government for his freedom after being arrested, along with 29 other Ponca, for attempting to return to his homeland. Lawyers filed a writ of habeas corpus to test the legality of the detention, an unprecedented action on behalf of a Native American.
After winning the case, Standing Bear and the members of the Ponca who had followed him were allowed to return to their old Nebraska reservation along the Niobrara River.
One issue that his 1879 trial had raised was finally resolved in 1924 when Congress adopted the Indian Citizenship Act, which conferred citizenship on all Native Americans born in the United States. USPS news release Apr 6, 2023 U.S. Postal Service Honors Chief Standing Bear
