Poland’s 2023 stamp program includes 66 stamps and 25 pre-stamped postcards. This year, Polska Poczta kicks off the season with their annual Lunar New Year set. Prolific designer Andrzej Gosik started the cycle with the Year of the Rat in 2020 and continues to 2023.
The fourth in the current cycle, the water rabbit, will be issued sometime in January.
Other interesting stamps to look for include the 550th Anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus’ Birth, more from the Birds of Polish Parks, Beauty of Poland, and Sacred Art. Other returning themes are Poles Saving Poles, Poles in Siberia, and Polish Spas, to name a few.
My personal favourite from 2022 was the Traditional Products and Regional Products pairing. Designers Bożydar Grozdew and Agnieszka Sancewicz provided a lush set, and the cancels are just about perfect.
But the real eye-catching part of the Regional Products stamp is the artwork along the selvedge. Sancewicz’s eye for details pushes this into a different category. The use of blue in the background reminds me of antique tiles often found in kitchens.
The series returns for 2023 with an as yet unnamed product. If it’s not food, I’ll be very disappointed.
What theme intrigues me the most? It won’t be the series you expect. November’s Tiled Stoves picks up from the (upcoming) December 2022 4 stamp set. And quite honestly is an unexpected delight for me. This series explores old, traditional, tiled stoves that are excellent examples of everyday technology as art. If you are unfamiliar with them, here’s a beautiful example from the Elbląg Museum.

22 January marks the 160th anniversary of the January Uprising. This was the largest armed struggle for independence of the peoples of the former Commonwealth against Russian rule. The Uprising had a unique symbol, a tripartite coat of arms depicting the Polish Eagle, the Lithuanian Pahonia, and the Ruthenian Archangel Michael.

This is Gosik’s Lunar New Year stamp. He studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology and, after graduating, went on to study at the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He has designed over 100 stamps for the Polish Post Office.
My painting, initially only oleine and acrylic, and finally watercolor, has accompanied me for several decades. It is clearly divided into two trends: realistic (landscape, portrait) and surreal. Both are now represented primarily in watercolor. In surrealist paintings I use many workshop experiments in order to obtain interesting, graphically diverse textures.
I also used my watercolours in the designs of over 100 postage stamps that I designed for the Polish Post. Some of my philatelic watercolours can be seen in the Polish Post Museum in Wrocław. Andrzej Gosik Images | Polish Art&Design Gallery (polish-art.eu)
Gosnik gave a live demonstration of his technique at the 4th international watercolour biennale at the Lokarjeva galerija in 2021. While he isn’t painting the Chinese New Year image, it’s still a fascinating look at a watercolourist at work. Beautiful video, worth the watch.

This issue commemorates the death of Chief of the Chancellery of the President Władysław Augustyn Stasiak and those on the Air Force flight who were killed in the Smolensk air disaster Polish Air Force Flight 101. The Polish officials were on their way to Smolensk, Russia for a remembrance ceremony the Katyn massacre. Stasiak was one of the 96 victims of the crash. This stamp is the 3rd issued in this series.

A good starting point to learn more about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is the Home – Warsaw Ghetto Museum (1943.pl). The site is in Polish and English. From their site:
On the morning of April 19, 1943, when the Germans began the final liquidation of the ghetto and the next wave of deportations, they were fired upon by groups of the Jewish armed conspiracy – the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) and the Jewish Military Union (ŻZW). The first of these organizations consisted of members of various left-wing groups, in the second fought mainly representatives of the Zionist right. The heaviest fights were fought in the vicinity of Muranowski Square, where the headquarters of ŻZW were located, and in the area of Zamenhofa and Franciszkańska streets, where ZOB fought.
On May 8, 1943, the bunker at 18 Miła Street, where the ZOB command had taken refuge, was discovered by the Germans. The commander of this organization, Mordechaj Anielewicz, was killed. This date can be considered as a symbolic end of the ghetto uprising. For the Germans, such an event was the blowing up of the great synagogue in Tłomackie on May 16, 1943. Juergen Stroop, who headed the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto, wrote in a report to Heinrich Himmler: “There is no longer a Jewish residential district in Warsaw.”

The Augustów Canal is a unique hydraulic engineering work, on a European scale, from the first half of the 19th century. Mississippi born Fauntleroy flew with the legendary 94th Fighter Squadron with Eddie Rickenbacker. In 1919 he volunteered to serve in the Polish Airforce during the Polish-Soviet War. He flew with the Polish 7th Air Escadrill / Kościuszko Escadrille.
Captain Merian C. Cooper (1893-1973)
Florida native Cooper joined the US served in France with the 201st Squadron, and later moved to the first Bombardment Group 20th Aero Squadron. In 1919 Fauntleroy encouraged him to join the Polish Airforce, and served from 1919-1921. He was shot down and taken prisoner in June 1920, spending 9 months in a Soviet prisoner of war camp before escaping and making his way to Latvia.

Photo was taken between 1939 and 1940 by Tadeusz Bukowski “Bonczy”.
The drawing was done by a child who survived the war. They drew it sometime in 1946 and is held in the Archive of New Acts in Warsaw, which recorded the memories of children when the war ended. It’s a substantial archive of artwork and written works created by children.

Beatification of the Ulma Family

Józef and Wiktoria Ulma were Polish Catholics who hid Jewish families. When Nazis began deporting Jewish families from their town Markowa in 1942, they began, the Ulmas hid 8 people, including 6 members of the Szall family on their small farm. On March 24, 1944, Germans surrounded the farm. What ensued was a brutal massacre of all people on the farm, including the 7 Ulma children and Wiktoria who was pregnant. When later questioned as to why all the children were slaughtered, the Lieutenant Eilert Dieken, the officer in charge, simply stated so they would have no problems with the children in the future.
The Ulmas are listed in the Yad Vashem’s Righteous Among the Nations
