Spanish stamps for 2021 can best be described as serious eye candy. Wine, cheese, olives, rolling landscape, charming villages – Oh Spain, what are you trying to do to me? The lush photographs are driving me to despair. I want to hop a plane and just wander the countryside now. 

It was a struggle getting all the details for the 2021 issues. I had to keep flipping between pdfs, news releases and different pages to pull together all the related stamps, cancels, postcards & FDCs. Unlike some post offices, Spain seems to compartmentalise each area and aren’t good at creating cross promoting links. There is a notice on the page saying a new philately site will premier sometime this spring. Fingers crossed they correct the chaotic feel. 

Cancels or are they postmarks?

I enjoyed posting info on Luxembourg’s postmarks so much, I’ve decided to make certain features I used on that page, a permanent addition. Spain’s commemorative cancels are now organised like individual stamp issues. I’ve also included additional information covering where the cancels are issued and how long they will be available. I hope you enjoy looking at these richly detailed cancels as much as I do.

Spanish stamps for 2021 – postcards too

Postcards are now taking a prominent place in these listings. I’m searching out cards issued by post offices so I can start categorising them. If I start getting too many, I’ll spin them off into their own category, but for now, they fit nicely onto pages like this one. Don’t miss the COVID-19 Waste Management postcards. They are printed on 100% recycled material. I’m trying to find a better scan of each to post, but so far, I only have the one with all cards fanned out. 

Themes for collectors 

A couple of items should make any wine drinker or collector thrilled. The Jan. 18 wine cask and glass postmark is the standout so far. No translation is needed to instantly understand the topic. The accompanying stamp and FDC is a nice set for Enophilatelica collectors. Wine on stamp fans should skip down to March 26 to the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture stamp, which rounds out the subject nicely. 

History takes front and centre on several stamps, including a few sports anniversaries, an attractive set about the Roman Colosseum and Toledo. Lots of collectable material coming out of Spain. 

One big irritant

The artwork and photography are first rate in each issue for 2021. The colours are deep and attractive, the compositions are eye popping. The problem I have is the lack of information on the artists and photographers. Nothing was easily available. Spain’s post office offers a lot of details about subject matter, locations, postmarks etc., but nothing about who created each item. I really hope they correct this with the new site.

450th Anniversary of Battle of Lepanto

Naval Combat of Lepanto, is the work of the Filipino painter Juan Luna y Novicio, in which exactly the moment in which the royal galley is recreated, at the head of which, was the illegitimate son of Carlos I of Spain, Don Juan de Austria, representing the king and as general in chief of the Holy League, collides face to face with a Turkish galleon.

The block sheet also includes a curious image of this painting: among the strong waves, a small boat appears in which, among other combatants of the Christian side, you can recognize the figure of what is perhaps the most famous soldier of that battle, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.
