San Marino – small country with a mighty stamp program. I was surprised with my favourite pick from last year’s program. I’ve gone back to the 2022 page a couple of times this past week, confirming, “yup, that’s the stamp I think was the best”. And here it is:
Artist Giovanni Giulianelli’s Memorial Artwork for the Health Emergency was the surprise hit in a year heavy with artwork both old and modern. This 4 stamp set of Giulianeli’s sculptures proved to be thought provoking. I normally gravitate to sharper colours but this set … it’s perfect.

February 11 was the International Day celebrating women and girls in the STEMS. This UN initiative began as an
… idea for an International Day of Women and Girls in Science was generated during the inaugural High-Level World Women’s Health and Development Forum organised by the Royal Academy of Science International Trust (RASIT) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), and held on 10-11 February 2015 at the United Nations Headquarters, with the participation of government Ministers and representatives from UNESCO, UN-Women, WHO, UNRWA, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the Every Woman Every Child Initiative. Most of the distinguished guests and speakers at the inaugural Forum, whether at ministerial, intergovernmental, diplomatic, academic or professional levels, were Women in Science. 75th Anniversary of the Birth of Gino Strada

Tributes have been paid to Gino Strada, the Italian surgeon and “maestro of humanity” known for setting up world-class hospitals for the victims of war, who has died aged 73.
The medic, who in 1994 co-founded the humanitarian organisation Emergency to provide free, quality healthcare for those injured in conflict, died on Friday in France, reports said.

A heart and lung transplant surgeon by training, Strada embarked on a mission to help heal those caught up in some of the world’s bloodiest and most intractable conflicts, including in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen.
Emergency started its work in Rwanda during the genocide, and says it has gone on to treat more than 11 million people in 19 countries. The organisation currently operates in Afghanistan, where it has a world-renowned surgical centre, Eritrea, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Yemen and Sudan, as well as Italy.
