I’m playing catch up with 2022 programs and San Marino 2022 stamps were on my list of “must do” countries. With so many stamps and covers whipping by my screen, it can be difficult to keep up, but eventually I get there.
2021 caught my eye with San Marino’s unorthodox approach to the anniversary of Dante’s death .
Instead of the usual portraits or death masks, designer Davide Pagliardini opted to explore Dante through words and typeface. It took me a bit of time to appreciate how he basically flipped the traditional idea of “A picture is worth a thousand words”.
The theme is the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, a more classic theme than in past years, but one that we have tried to make original anyway by illustrating some passages from the work that made the poet immortal, the Divine Comedy, through lettering compositions. Dante Alighieri Stamps – Davide Pagliardini : Davide Pagliardini
This single set hooked me on San Marino, and led me to bookmarking Pagliardini’s website. So here we are, with a second year exploring art, history and San Marino at large. Do I have a favourite for 2022? No, not so far. Nothing leaps out like 2021’s Dante set. Sometimes it takes a few months before a single issue percolates to the top. If I finally settle on one, I’ll post it on the 2023 page, which is already being setup. It won’t take me a year to post it this time, promise.

Donkey and Bear or Marino and the Bear
Marino lived in the mountains with his donkey. One day, Marino left his donkey on the path while he went off to get a drink from a stream and pick a few berries. When he came back, his poor donkey had been killed and eaten by a bear. Instead of being angered, Marino patted the bear and asked it if it would like to take the place of his donkey. Marino fed the bear some of his berries and soon, the bear went from being violent to a gentle friend.
