Thailand’s post office duplicates last year’s program by starting with Lunar New Year and National Children’s Day stamps. Once again, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s artwork graces the New Year stamps, this time with a happy, slightly whimsical tiger and it’s little bat friend. The long running series is charming, with the pig in a blue bowtie the star.
Other stamps of note last year came from the Lunar New Year foods series. 2021 featured designer Mayuree Naknisorn’s 4 stamp look at favourite Thai desserts.
I’m a sucker for anything food related. This Lunar New Year treat began in 2017 and it looks like Naknisorn is responsible for all 6 years worth of delicious stamp snacks.
It’s difficult rounding up details about Thai artists and designers. That isn’t going to stop me from looking, but it means gaps in the info I supply will remain. If you have any tips on locating details on them, let me know. And language is no obstacle. With Google translate and a bit of common sense, I can decipher almost anything.
Check out last year’s stamps and let me know which was your favourite. Always happy to hear from readers.

Vasak Day took place May 16, 2022.
“Vesak”, the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world. It was on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., that the Buddha was born. It was also on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away. Vesak Day | United Nations
This continued collection of stamps from last year features series of flowers in the Buddha’s history. Sal Tree is related to the events of the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. He was born under the Sal tree and sat under the shade before attaining enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. He later passed away under a pair of Sal trees. A couple of errors:
The “cancels” mentioned in the Thai Heritage Conservation Day description are chop marks provided at various post offices in the Bangkok area that Thai collectors try to decorate their covers with. They are not permitted to use on stamps; you do see them applied on items that do not go through the mail but the recipient will be fined if they are actually mailed with the chopmark covering the stamp. Thais know that doing so defaces the stamp and, particularly when the stamp portrays a Royal or Buddhist subject, this is considered lese majeste.
Also, the 6 May issue has nothing to do with HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, second daughter of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and younger sister of King Vajiralongkorn. She was born on 2 April (and is only 67 years old); often, there is a second release on her birthday having to do with the Red Cross as she is the head of the Thai Red Cross but it was cancelled this year. The stamp marks the birth centenary of Princess Vibhavadi Rangsit, third cousin to King Bhumibol. A fiction writer and active in southern Thailand’s rural development, she was killed in February 1977 when her helicopter was attacked from the ground by communist insurgents.
Also, the Princess Vibhavadi Rangsit stamp was originally scheduled to be released on 20 November 2020 but has repeatedly been delayed due to COVID-19.
As always Mark, thank you for the information.
