Luxembourg 2021 stamps & cancels are uncluttered & visually appealing. The program didn’t kick off until March, so it’s a relative late starter in the stamp world.
According to Luxembourg’s emissions calendar, the year was to start with a stamp celebrating the Stade du Luxembourg, but it doesn’t seem to have made the March 9th cut. Nor did the second stamp on the list 125 years of the Lycee technique des Arts et Metiers. They may pop up later in the year, who knows. As of the date of this article’s publication, Japan will go on with this year’s Olympics so the Olympiad stamps will be issued after all. There was a great deal of speculation that many of the Olympic stamps would be postponed if the event was pushed back a year. This news should please a few sports collectors I know.
Slogan Cancels 2021
Luxembourg’s post office website is well organised and easy to wander around. One of the surprises, for me, is how well presented the cancels are. Luxembourg offers a number of slogan cancels as well as the usual First Day Cover post marks. Instead of hiding them, or barely making note of their existence, Luxembourg has an entire category devoted to promoting them. As someone who loves the work put into post marks, this is deeply appreciated.
I’m trying something a bit different on this page with the slogan cancels. Since they aren’t issued with a stamp, they kind of stand out there alone. I’ve set them up as separate items below and listed them as I do the stamps. First Day Cover cancels are nested in with the specific FDCs, but the slogans are setup individually, along with the dates they are available. Looks like the slogans have a short shelf-life of approx. one month. If you see one you want, don’t waste anytime sending off for it.
If you are interested, you need to look at the Philatelic Service via Luxembourg Post:
PHILATELIC CANCELLATION SERVICE
Since the opening of the automatic sorting and cancellation center, postmarks with promotional slogans can be applied only to address mail that is forwarded through the regular postal channel. Items should be sent to: POST Courrier – Centre de Tri, Z.A. Krakelshaff L-3290 Bettembourg.

Cancel Hound alert
If you are a cancel collector, it would be well worth the time looking through Luxembourg’s site. They maintain a lengthy archive of past marks, with good scans online. You can create your own database of cancels you want to hunt down. There are themes to suit every collection – birds, animals, vehicles, food, military and much more. Last year, they issued what I consider one of the best cancels of 2019. The detailed work on the feathers and beak are beautiful and the eye has a liquid lifelike feel to it.
SEPAC & EUROPA
Luxemburg is a member of both SEPAC and Europa so will have stamps for both this year’s competitions. The SEPAC theme for 2021 is historical maps and Europa’s theme is Endangered National Wildlife. Europa is set for May and SEPAC will be issued in September. It’ll be fun to compare them to other member countries.

Today, the promotion of fruit growing in Luxembourg is one of the main objectives of the association. In Luxembourg, the level of self-sufficiency in fruit is currently 1%. Therefore, in the first instance, the farms are supported and motivated to expand the areas under cultivation.

Over the last 50 years, the FMPO has often played the role of initiator or co-initiator in the implementation of new social and pedagogical concepts in Luxembourg. The FMPO can therefore proudly claim to have opened the first shelter for women in distress in 1976, the first shelter for young mothers in 1987, the first day centre for teenagers in 1995, the first day and night centre for young parents in 2013 and the first shelter for victims of trafficking in human beings in 2019.

16th century Map of Luxembourg – Jakob van Deventer (1500 – 1575).
van Deventer was a cartographer commissioned by Spanish kings Charles V and Philip II.
Jakob van Deventer mapped all the cities in the Netherlands for Philip II. His work was largely unknown until the 19th century. He mapped between 250 and 260 cities from all over the Netherlands, north Germany and France and Luxembourg.
To properly illustrate the city he measured up various points in the city and joined them together. He thereby made use of triangulation. He went and stood somewhere in the city and chose two points that he could see. He measured the distance between the two points and his stand point and measured the angle between the two lines. This way he could calculate what the distance was between both endpoints of the lines. This was a new method. Maps by Jacob van Deventer – Het Utrechts Archief (google.com)
