Arist Sigrid Hjertén born 1885
On October 27, 1885, Swedish avant-garde artist Sigrid Hjertén was born.
Sigrid Hjertén (1885–1948) is a front figure of the Swedish Modernist avantgarde. In her early days, she was a pupil of Henri Matisse´s in Paris, where she was also influenced by the art of Paul Cézanne. Hjertén’s expressive colourist painting caused her to be both feted and maligned by her contemporaries. The exhibition features a large number of her works from the 1910s and up to her critically-acclaimed breakthrough in the 1930s, when some of her most captivating and colouristically intense works were painted. Part of the Stockholmia 86 International Stamp Exhibition series
Issued in 1885 by Sweden’s post office
Engraved by Czeslaw Slania, using Hjerten’s original oil painting.
From the high balcony, she has a magnificent view of Stockholm, the Old Town, Riddarholmskyrkan and the new City Hall under construction. Down there the street is bustling and Hjertén translates the chaotic scene into colours. With a deft hand she contrasts the warm reddish-gold curtain with the green and red rooftops, the blue torn sky and the black chimneys of the boats. By refinedly placing warm and cold colours against each other, and with a modern expression, Hjertén breaks new ground with her painting. The year before, together with Isaac Grünewald and Leander Engström, she participated in the major expressionist exhibition at Liljevalchs. The exhibition is considered the breakthrough of modern painting in Sweden and was received with mixed reviews. Utsikt över Slussen – Works – Sigrid Hjertén – Artists – Moderna Museet
