Algeria 2022 stamps start the year with a postponed issue. The Africa Cup was slated to run last year, but because of the pandemic, it, and the stamp, were delayed. Catch up on the Africa Cup here Africa Cup of Nations 2021 Qualifier, Fixtures & Schedules (fifaworldcupnews.com).
Luckily there won’t be the same misfire with designer information this year that I experienced in early 2021. Last year presented frustrating barriers when it came to finding details about Algerian artists and designers. I spent time researching them and hope this year will be better. Algerian designers, like Tayeb Laidi and Mohamed Guettouche, have such a distinct style, I’d really like to flesh this page out and offer a proper showcase for their work.
Algeria’s post office issues FDCs and cancels but I have a tough time rounding them up. Expect their appearance to be hit and miss. If you have scans and would like to share them, let me know in the comments.

May 8, 1945 is a landmark date that marks in history, the end of a devastating war. It was the war that was won by the Allied states against Nazism. But in Algeria, the same date of May 8, 1945 recounts one of the most heinous massacres carried out by the forces of the occupier against the Algerian people. In fact, it is indeed a genocide that caused the death of 45 thousand Martyrs, who took to the streets to celebrate the defeat of Nazism and remind the France of the need to honor its promises of freedom and independence for Algeria. Traditional Culture of Oran
Oran blouza & the gallal
This pair of stamps celebrates the culture of coastal province of Oran.
Commonly known as Blouza Wahraniya, Blouza Mansouria or Blouzat Sidi Boumediene, the Blouza remains to this day the traditional outfit that most characterizes the cultural landscape of our city of Oran. Indeed, although this outfit was of Tlemcenian origin at its beginnings, a point that a certain part of the Tlemcenian population still claims to this day, the Blouza has definitely become an integral part of the culture of Oran, and this following the installation of many Tlemcenian couturiers at the level of our capital of the West, where the latter have refined their know-how and have thus adapted this outfit at the same time to the trends and tastes of the local oran female population. Thus, this outfit has quickly become popular over the years, to the point of being directly propelled as a necessity and an essential dress in the context of wedding celebrations. Blouza, The traditional dress typically Oran (guide-oran.com)
The gallal is a traditional percussion instrument, made of clay, leather and rope. It comes in 3 sizes – large called an EI-Khellaf, medium called Er-Rbaa and a small version called EI-Aridja.
This video shows a musician using a gallal. If you are one of my readers from Algeria, and have some good websites to share about Algerian culture, traditions and history, please drop them in the comments below. I’d like to have a solid archive of material for future stamps.

Two musicians are featured this year: Mohamed Tahar El Fergani (1928-2016) and Athmane Bali
The best writeups come via Algeria Post. I’ve included 2 videos featuring both and it’s interesting to listen to them back to back and hear the diversity in their styles. Enjoy them!
Mohamed Tahar FERGANI began his artistic career by training, at the age of six, to play the “flute” instrument, then by playing the “Ney”. At first, he was attracted by oriental art, the basics of which he learned by joining the association “l’Aube”, where he performed poems by great artists such as “Oum Kalthoum” and “Mohamed Abd El Wahab”.
Then the Algerian artist changed his style and turned to the “Malouf”, which is one of the derivatives of the ancient and famous Andalusian music in Constantine. His teachers were “Sheikh Hassouna” and “Sheikh Baba Abeid” who themselves studied music with his father, “Hamou FERGANI”.
Mohamed Tahar FERGANI managed to establish himself in the art of “Malouf” thanks to his exceptional voice which, according to experts, was characterized by the ability to interpret the songs on four groups of eight units (octaves). He also interpreted traditional songs in a balanced way while having a delicate musical sense and playing the violin remarkably, which later made him a true school of Malouf art for more than half a century. National Artist Day – Algeria Post (poste.dz)
You can find videos on YouTube and Daily Motion featuring Fergani. This one, from 1996 at the Malouf Festival at the Palace of Culture in Constantine is a good example of his skills. If you can, search Daily Motion for earlier videos.
His real name’ [was] Moubarak Othmani (1953 – 2005), he’s considered as an icon of creativity and musical heritage… Algerian Targui artist who gained international fame by elevating the ancient Targui art, and carrying the Tindi song from the oases of the desert to the world music halls.
He was born in May 1953 in the city of Djanet, in the southeast of Algeria. He learned the bases and the principles of religion by his father the
faqih (specialist in Islamic jurisprudence), then joined the primary school in Djanet, to continue his secondary education in the city of
Tamanrasset, and it was when he joined the high school troupe that his talents were noticed. Later, he joined the Capital in aim to practice his
paramedical training, and formed his band in 1987.The beginning of Athmane BALI in the musical field was very difficult, as his singing was denied and rejected because singing among the
Touareg is a women’s specialty. But his insistence made him the most famous singer and musician in the region, especially after the release of
his first album “Assouf” (Nostalgia) in 1987. National Artist Day – Algeria Post (poste.dz)
The next video is Bali performing live at the Rhiad el Feth, shortly before his death in 2005. It’s not the best quality video, but does show off his talents. You can find earlier recordings on Youtube as well.
