The US 2022 stamp program offers up a rich sampling of American history and culture. I spent a fun afternoon chasing down interesting links and videos to share with you about the topics and artists involved with the program. Not all material has been attached below (as of publishing date) because I’m saving a few treats for the actual release days.
2021 produced 2 sets that were tops in my view. The first was April’s Espresso Drinks. The team of artist Terry Allen and designer Gary Breeding produced a delicious and classic 4 stamp set.

Breeding’s use of different typography for each drink created a wonderful, vintage feel to the designs.
The next set was artist Ryan Feerer’s first design for USPS. He was thrilled to be asked to work with Greg Breeding to produce what I think is an iconic set of Americana.
I’m so thankful that @gregbreeding gave me the opportunity to work on this. Such an amazing human being and incredible to work with. I can’t express how much this project means to me. My grandfather was a postmaster in a small New Mexico town. He would’ve been so proud!
Ryan Feerer June 25, 2021 in a Twitter conversation (I added the italics & bolding)
I hope to see Feerer return to stamp design duties one day.
The new year is a banner year for women in history, with Edmonia Lewis, Katharine Graham, Women Cryptologists and Eugenie Clark each honoured. Good history, good artwork and a rich stable of talented designers have produced another fun year for American stamp collectors.

45th stamp in the Black Heritage series honors Edmonia Lewis, the first African American and Native American sculptor to earn international recognition. The stamp art is a casein-paint portrait based on a photograph of Lewis by Augustus Marshall made in Boston between 1864 and 1871.
USPS issuing Edmonia Lewis Black Heritage Forever stamp Jan. 26 – Newsroom – About.usps.com
Edmonia Lewis is considered the first professional BIPOC sculptor in the United States and the first to achieve international acclaim. Even though much of her work has not survived into the 21st century, Lewis used her art to depict the stories of women and Indigenous people with reverence and beauty. Shattering gender and racial expectations in the 19th-century U.S., her life story is a testament to the ability to succeed despite adversity. The Palace of Fine Arts is located in the Marina District of San Francisco. If you ever get a chance to visit San Francisco, take it and don’t miss seeing this beautiful piece of architecture.
Following the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was inspired to show the world how it had risen from the ashes. So, in 1910, business and civic leaders convened to discuss making the city the site of the century’s first great world’s fair, a grand exposition to honor the completion of the Panama Canal. In two hours, $4 million was raised and San Francisco beat competitors like New Orleans and Washington, D.C. to host the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

George Morrison was an Ojibwa modernist landscape artist. This video features a fascinating lecture on George Morrison, by Dr. Patricia Marroquin Norby (Purepecha), Associate Curator of Native American Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
One of the nation’s greatest modernist artists and a founding figure of Native American modernism, George Morrison challenged prevailing ideas of what Native American art should be, arguing that an artist’s identity can exist independently from the nature of the art he creates. He is best known for his abstract landscape paintings and monumental wood collages, which draw on childhood memory and reflect a deep and abiding connection with the natural world. Artist/designer: Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya
Earlier in my career, my goal was simply to convey scientific ideas and findings in more compelling ways. My goals were to inform and inspire. Over time, I’ve set my sights higher, challenging people to reexamine their beliefs, truly understand someone else’s perspective, and consider what a better world could look like. I believe art has a responsibility to question preconceived notions and create new possibilities. Bio — Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya—Multidisciplinary Artist (alonglastname.com)

Believe it or not, it’s time to look at the 2022 Austrian stamps. Not sure how Österreichische Post will top their mask and mittens from 2021, but I’m sure they’ll come up with something. If there’s one thing Austrian stamp designers excel in, it’s creating unusual and fun shapes. This year, we get toques – or woolen hats to the rest of the world.

The hats are a nice follow up to the wildly popular Mini FFP2 Mask.
David Gruber created this mini masterpiece that was embroidered on PPE material.
A number of established series will continue into 2022. They include:
- vintage motorcycles and cars
- musical instruments
- Historic Postal Vehicles
- classic Austrian stamps
- anniversaries for important Austrian industries
- EUROPA
- Christmas
Also scattered throughout the year will be further topics dealing with history, music and art.
Images will be replaced as the year progresses with better ones as Austria issues each stamp. NOTE: All crypto stamps can be found on the specialty world crypto stamp page.

This company has a rich tradition, with its roots dating back to the year 1550. That is when the original pan forge was founded in Ybbsitz in the Lower Austrian Mostviertel region. The manufacture of high-quality porcelain enamel kitchenware began here in 1922. Riess
The stamp shows a selection of colourful pots from the “Pastel” series that has been popular since the 1950s. RIESS uses natural raw materials to produce handmade pots, pans, and other kitchenware that are long-lived and recyclable.

Since 1964, the Austrian Film Museum has been dedicated to the preservation, research and presentation of the medium of film. Its activities are as diverse as the medium itself: the Film Museum operates a cinema, preserves collections, and is a research and educational institution.
Above all, however, the Film Museum is a place of encounter with images and stories that, in the best case, can change our view of the
world. Film is the most important new art form and provides the most impressive contemporary documents since the beginning of the 20th century. Film Museum – Home
Designer Gertie Fröhlich (1930–2020) designed the Museum’s logo, basing the fish on the mythical “Zyphius”. “Gertie Fröhlich had seen this fantasy animal in a historical publication and thought that an animal that can live both on land and in the water would be a fitting symbol for the Film Museum, which she hoped would never go under.” Commemorative stamp Film Museum – PostAG

As a former army officer, Roda Roda knew what he wrote about. After all, it was mostly because of his humorous stories that he was stripped of his officer rank. EUROPA 2022 – Der Eisenerzer Wassermann

1 stamp, FDC, cancel, sheets of 50, non-philatelic black and white print, info sheet
offset & hot foil printing
The Eisenerz Waterman (merman)
This is a legend from the Styrian mountains that explains how the Erzberg district became a rich source of iron ore. Locals near Leopoldsteiner Lake (near Erzberg) captured a “waterman” or a merman. The creature bargained with his captures and promised untold riches if they would release him. In return for his freedom, the people of Erzberg would receive one of the following rewards “gold for ten years, silver for a hundred years, or iron ore forever.”
After a great deal of thinking and discussion, they settled on iron ore and have been mining iron from the mountains since that time. After granting their reward, the merman leapt into a spring and disappeared. The spring is still called the Black Puddle.

It’s time for a look at Turkey’s 2022 stamps. I discovered a lot about Turkey last year, by way of researching their 2021 stamp program. A couple of gems popped up that gave me a fresh appreciation of Turkey’s history and art. The best of last year was definitely Paintings of Our Turkish Painters featuring Turkish artist Devrim Erbil.
\

The only disappointing thing about the Turkish stamp program is the lack of information on designers. I’m still scouring the internet looking for details, but so far no luck.
This year is already exciting. I’ve plunked in some details ahead of the stamps releases, in hopes you become as excited as I am about the topics. So far they include the popular EUROPA and EUROMED competitions. This year’s EUROPA covers myths and legends and EUROMED is underwater archaeology. Turkey will also issue a stamp for the 2022 Qatar FIFA championship and another COVID issue along with a number of important centenaries.
A good year coming up and I’m looking forward to seeing the designs.

Cittaslow Cities
definitives

The Movement of Cittaslow was born in 1999 through the Paolo Saturnini’s brilliant intuition, past Mayor of Greve in Chianti, a little town of Tuscany.
The new idea of considering the town itself and thinking of a different way of development, based on the improving of life quality , moved him to spread his thoughts all over our country. Fastly his ideals were endorsed by Mayors of towns of Bra (Francesco Guida), Orvieto ( Stefano Cimicchi) and Positano ( Domenico Marrone) as well as they met later the president of slow food Carlo Petrini’s support. The main goal of Cittaslow, was and still is today, to enlarge the philosophy of Slow Food to local communities and to government of towns, applying the concepts of ecogastronomy at practice of everyday life. Köroglu
Köroglu is a just, brave, courageous, warm hearted, faithful hero and folk poet in the tradition of the Turkish folk tale.In the stamp image, Koroglu was expressed on a rampant gray horse spreading its wings in a desire to avenge his father (Ürüşan baba), who had unjustly lost his eyes at the behest of the local ruler. While the ‘ram’s horn’ motif symbolizes the heroism of Köroglu, the ‘eye motif’ on the evil eye bead reminds of Köroglu’s father, who lost his eye due to horse selection. These motifs, which are embroidered into weavings and beads, also reflect Anatolian Aesthetics.

Uluburun Shipwreck
Late Bronze Age shipwreck found off the coast of Uluburun (Grand Cape), Turkey. Archeologists estimate the wreck dates from around the 14thc BCE. Constructed from Lebanese cedar, it was capable of carrying up to 20 tons of cargo. When it was discovered, it proved to be a great find because it’s cargo had not been plundered, giving archeologists a chance to examine it’s ancient cargo.
The ship, probably originally from Phoenicia/Canaan, dates to between 1330 and 1300 BCE and was carrying a full cargo of trade goods, perhaps from a port in the southern part of ancient Lycia and likely on its way to the Greek mainland. Uluburun Shipwreck – World History Encyclopedia
According to the World History Encylcopedia, the ship carried raw materials needed to make bronze.

Christmas Island’s 2022 stamps start off much like they did in 2021 – with a New Year bang. Artist Chrissy Lau is a busy person. Not only has she completed both of Christmas Island’s 2021 and 2022 Lunar New Year stamps, she was also responsible for Guernsey’s beautiful postal works of art. This year is the Year of the Tiger and, seriously, how can you go wrong with tigers as a motif?
Australia’s Post Office issued 3 sets for Christmas Island stamps last year. Sea turtles were bookended by the New Year and Christmas stamps. The largest set to be issued was the annual Lunar new year and this year is no different. Australia’s post office went full throttle on cancels, numismatic covers, gold foil stamps and more. It’s a huge selection of collectables.
Not much else to say other than “Enjoy”.

Such “Kowalskis”, who stood on the side of an innocent man, on the side of good, and this despite the highest punishment introduced by the occupant, were hundreds of thousands on a national scale. Today’s anniversary is the most appropriate opportunity to remind about the courage and sacrifice of many brave Poles, both those known and appreciated after the war, as well as those anonymous, although deserving of no less respect– emphasizes Tomasz Zdzikot, President of Poczta Polska. The legend of Krak and the Wawel dragon
We finally have a dragon! Yoair Blog – The world’s anthropology blog publication has an excellent synopsis of the tale and it’s variations. If you are interested in dragon myths, don’t miss Yoair’s page on the history of dragons and myths.
The Wawel Dragon was a beast which lived in a den under Wawel Hill and terrorised all the inhabitants of King Krak’s town. They had to feed to the monster by giving him offerings of cattle, while other tales speak of that hellspawn eating nothing but virgins. No knight could vanquish the monster, until a young shoemaker Skuba outsmarted the Dragon. He stuffed a ram’s hide with sulphur and pitch, and put the doctored ram in front of the Dragon’s Den. The monster caught the bait and devoured the ram. Immediately, he felt a bad pain and burning in the throat. To quench his thirst, the Dragon started to drink from the Vistula River. However, as water cannot extinguish burning sulphur, the gases produced by the fires inside him made the beast explode. All the townsfolk revelled in the news and the heroic shoemaker was properly rewarded. To commemorate the vanquishing of the Dragon, Bronisław Chromy designed a sculpture of the beast which now stands by the river at the foot of Wawel, near the Dragon’s Den. by catpaw | 25 Dec, 2021 | Espresso fueled mumblings, Stamps
I just finished posting all last year’s issues and I’m already plunging into France’s 2022 stamps. Hopefully this year I won’t take so long writing about them. But damnit, I kept tripping over information to include and falling down history rabbit holes. 2021 was a hell of a lot of fun to explore.
I think the highlight of 2021 was Christophe Laborde-Balen’s tribute to French author Jean de la Fontaine. The philatelic folder and detailed souvenir sheet contained references to 10 of de la Fontaine’s fables. The set was pure delight. Hungary and Monaco issued stamps for de la Fontaine’s 400th anniversary as well, but France did the best job.

Another thrill this year was the 75th Autumn Philatelic Fair, which brought a bumper selection of Mariannes, including in two posters.

They are prints of artist Yseult Digan’s 2018 Marianne (with Elsa Catelin on engraving duties). These are so frame worthy, I actually covet them. The 75th Fair produced so many collectibles, I would have struggled to contain myself if I’d attended. Maybe one day I’ll make it to the Fall Fair.
New this year: When I remember, I’ll post upcoming artist signings. Le Carré d’Imprimerie arranges for designers/engravers to attend sessions to sign stamps, covers and philatelic souvenirs. All signings take place at Le Carré d’Encre, 13 bis rue des Mathurins 75009 PARIS.
This section covers January to May. To see June to September stamps click here France 2022 stamps – June to Sept | Bitter Grounds Magazine.
Enough of 2021, let’s head off to 2022. Here’s hoping the year brings about easier times for all of us.
Cheers
Catpaw

“It has been so long since the memory of men remembers it, the Jade Emperor, in the kingdom of Heaven, decided to organize a race between all the animals.”
This legend has it that the first three to arrive were the rat, by cunning, the buffalo, by its power and, finally, the third was the tiger who crossed the river – the last obstacle – and arrived, exhausted, at the feet of the Emperor. Admiring, the sovereign granted him the third place in the Chinese calendar. Chinese New Year – Year of the Tiger | The ink square (lecarredencre.fr)

Europa 2022 – Myths and Legends – Mélusine

1 stamp, cancel, sheets of 9
intaglio
This is a fascinating folk tale that is explained in great detail here Melusine – World History Encyclopedia. It’s a great read. But short version is Melusine was young woman cursed by her mother to live a double life. Every Saturday, she would turn into a serpent like or mermaid like creature every Saturday She was doomed to be alone until she found a man who would both respect her request to not disturb her on Saturdays and, would also love her unconditionally if he found out she was cursed.
Cue her marriage to a great noble man, who one day spied on her, thus forcing her to leave. The story has a number of variations, but this is one of the most familiar. It’s basically an very old cautionary tale about truth, loyalty and lying. The legend pops up in many folk stories throughout Europe, including Germanic and Norse tales, like The Swan Maiden and the Valkyrie. Eastern European stories involving Baba Yaga, also use the transformation mythology to teach lessons. But check out the link above for a first class write up that touches on the Melusine’s influence across Europe. It’s an easy read and fascinating.

This stamp was unveiled during a ceremony March 24, 2022 at the Hôtel de la Marine. It was created in collaboration with the Foundation for the Memory of Slavery and the Centre des Monuments Nationaux.
Solitude was a former slave in Guadeloupe. She fought against the French attempt to re-establish slavery in Guadeloupe during Napoleon’s reign. In 1802, while 3 months pregnant, she was captured by French forces and sentenced to hang. The day after she gave birth, she was taken out and executed, November 19, 1802. Her child became the property of a slave owner.
Her story was lost or over 100 years until French author André Schwarz-Bart re-discovered her in the 1960s. Solitude is now considered a hero of anti slavery in Guadeloupe.

Artist: Sarah Moon from her Histoires d’hirondelles
Sarah Moon is an award winning French photographer who began her career in photography in 1970. One of the best short bios I found on here is rom the Hundred Heroines website: Sarah Moon – French Photographer – Hundred Heroines.
Looking into Sarah Moon’s extraordinary photographs is comparable to looking through a two-way mirror. The mirror surface becomes the print and the viewer has the privilege of standing on the ‘other-side’ looking through the image at the same time. The living creatures are rendered so ‘still’ and conversely the inanimate objects, such as the dolls, become human and expressive with their own inimitable character, ultimately mirroring each other. There is an atmosphere and intensity, which is constantly apparent that sets her work apart. It is also the range of subject matter, the banal, the incidental, and the secret that Sarah Moon allows us to see in a new and extraordinary light. NOTE: Sarah MOON will host a signing session from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 27.
