Have a birthday elephant for June 5… and mushrooms, wine & eggplants

Happy birthday Chris! Your present includes elephants, wine, mushrooms and eggplants

It’s my site and I can interpret SODs anyway I choose.

I did an extensive search and can confirm there is no one single stamp showing all four. The elephant I can understand, but to miss out on showcasing  good wine, eggplants and mushrooms on one stamp is tantamount to gourmand heresy. Such is the state of the world.  We’ll start the page of with a birthday elephant.

Designer 貝淵 純子 Junko Kaibuchi used ukiyo-e artist Keisai Kuwagata’s (1764-1824) artwork.
The elephant illustration can be found in Keisai’s 1797 book How to Draw Birds, Insects and Fish Simply (Chōjū ryakugashiki) 鳥獣略画式.
Woodblock printed book; ink and colour on paper

If the world won’t give us wine, mushrooms and eggplants together, we’ll have to settle for more stamps. Next is a birthday celebration complete with wine.

This is us celebrating his birthday this weekend. Luckily we won’t have to make the wine, it’ll be supplied .. I hope. Hmmm.

Mushrooms were trickier, primarily because there are so damn many stamps to go through. What to choose? Magic ones, dancing mushrooms … no, no, that feels like we’ve been nibbling edibles. Poisonous? Yea, no. Since Chris is cooking us a meal (it’s his birthday, he gets to do what he wants), I’ll avoid the pretty looking fungus of death stamps. I settled on a nice Boletus Edulis or Cèpes from the south of France because well… they’ll be there next week.

And finally glorious eggplants courtesy of Laos. They don’t need an explanation. The sheet is simply beautiful and eggplants are a nice addition to any birthday gift.
