died on July 20, 2005
James Doohan entered TV history with his portrayal of Lt. Commander Scott, engineering genius with the original Star Trek series.
“I decided to give Scotty an Aberdeen accent, which was something I had learned […] when I was sent over to England during the war. While I was there, I met this fellow from Aberdeen; and I couldn’t understand one word he said! But I did learn that accent from him and that was the one I used for Scotty.”

Born in Vancouver, BC, he grew up in Sarnia Ontario. His portrayal of engineer Scott inspired a generation of young people to pursue engineering as a career.
Mr. Doohan influenced a generation of engineers, who saw him as role model. The Milwaukee School of Engineering awarded Mr. Doohan an honorary doctor of engineering degree in 1993 “after a survey of students revealed that a large number of respondents said the character Scotty’s ‘engineer’ title piqued their interest in the field,” said Kathleen McCann, a spokeswoman for the school. “He brought the field of engineering to the forefront of pop culture,” she said in an e-mail response to questions. His ashes had nearly as an adventurous life as the living Doohan.
