Thailand celebrates it’s 44th National Science Day

Each August 18th Thailand celebrates National Science Day.

Begun in 1982, the date coincides with the day King Mongkut observed a full solar eclipse over Thailand in 1868, an event he predicted 2 years previously.

National Science Day in Thailand is celebrated annually on August 18th to mark the anniversary of a total solar eclipse in 1868, which was forecasted by King Mongkut (Rama IV) two years earlier.

The day serves several purposes: to honor King Mongkut’s contributions to science as the “Father of Thai Science,” to foster a scientific culture and encourage public engagement with science, to promote and disseminate research and technological advancements, to strengthen collaboration between public and private sectors in applying science and technology for national development, and to provide a platform for researchers and inventors to showcase their work to the public.

National Science Day
Issued by Thailand in 1985

This year’s celebration occurs in the middle of the Thailand National Science and Technology Fair. This year the major issue being considered is: “The world no longer needs only to ask “how far can science take us,” but must ask a new question: “how can science help the world survive?”.
