July 29 is National Thai Language Day.
National Thai Language Day is meant to remember the importance of the Thai language. Around the year 1826, King Ramkhamhaeng the Great invented “Thai letters” for the first time. Adapted from the Mon and Khmer letters, it has consonants, vowels, and tones to represent various meanings and sounds in the Thai language, which later developed into the “Thai alphabet” that we use today.

In Thai language, there are 44 consonants, 21 vowels, and five superscript characters that modify tone and vowel length.
Similar to English, Thai sentences are constructed left to right and have phonetic words. Unlike English, Thai words can have vowels that appear before, after, above, and below the consonant and Thai sentences do not have any formal punctuation.
