Three Little Pigs premier May 25

Disney’s Three Little Pigs  premiered at Radio City Music Hall on May 25, 1933.

The 8 minute animated film was a huge hit with the public and earned an Academy Award for Best Animated Short.

The Three Little Pigs offers a slightly different take on the time-honored tale of a trio of oinkers who have a disastrous run-in with a big, bad wolf. Directed by Burt Gillett, the short enjoyed a long theatrical run and won an Academy Award in 1934. In addition, its title song, ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf?,’ became a Depression-era anthem. In a poll conducted in the ’90s, animators voted it No. 11 in a list of the 50 best cartoons of all time.

It was interesting to see SV&G include the original story boarding for the movie. This was the first time the story boarding technique was used to frame out a show.

The success of Disney’s first smash hit surprised him—customers in music stores clamored for sheet music of the song, but none had been prepared. Disney sent his musicians to the theater to copy the words and music from the screen to rectify these demands. The popularity of Pigs generated a large amount of merchandising, which included storybooks, figurines soap, watches, sand buckets, and sprinkling cans, among countless others. It became the first film to return a higher gross in merchandising royalties than its box office reception. https://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/walt-disneys-three-little-pigs-1933/
