Friedrichsort Lighthouse

Gregor Mendel discovered the basic principles of heredity through experiments with pea plants, long before the discovery of DNA and genes. Mendel was an Augustinian monk at St Thomas’s Abbey near Brünn (now Brno, in the Czech Republic). He studied natural sciences and mathematics at the University of Vienna, Austria, but twice failed to obtain a teaching certificate, instead becoming a part-time assistant teacher and carrying out research in plant breeding. Neuschwanstein Castle

This stamp resurrects the Sights of Germany series that ran from November 1987 to February 2004.
The “fairytale castle” Neuschwanstein, modelled on a medieval knight’s castle, was built in the second half of the 19th century by order of King Ludwig II of Bavaria (r. 1864-1886) on a rocky ridge near Füssen. Various influences were reflected in the design of the castle, which was to serve as a private retreat, especially the legends of the Middle Ages and the operas of the composer Richard Wagner. Every year, one and a half million guests visit Neuschwanstein Castle. It is one of the most famous sights in Germany.

The Smurfs, written by the Belgian comic artist Peyo (Pierre Culliford, 1928-1992), have been experiencing their adventures for almost 65 years. The equally cheeky and lovable goblin Pumuckl has sprung from the head of the radio play and children’s book author Elisabeth “Ellis” Kaut (1920-2015). The original 9-Kreuzer stamp was from the Grand Duchy of Baden. The 1851 misprint stamp was sold at auction in 2019 for 1.26 million euros. From Deustche Post:
… a mistake was made in their production, because blue-green paper was used for a partial edition of the stamps to nine cruisers, which were actually supposed to be pink, which was intended for the 6-kreuzer stamp. Most likely, the printer had read the digit upside down. But the misprint went unnoticed and went on sale. Three stamped copies are confirmed as genuine today.
