2021 Portuguese stamps presented a bit of a struggle, designer-wise. I’m still searching for details on the stamp designers listed below and at best, I’ve found a few basic links, but nothing worth posting. For some reason, most of the links I found were dead or out dated. I’ll keep looking, it’ll be worth it.
The good news is CTT, Correios de Portugal, offers solid information by way of downloadable pdfs. You can scoop them free and keep them for future references. They are high quality and the images are pristine.
Bits ‘n pieces
The Europa releases include joint issues with Madeira and Azores. I’ll be putting together pages for them shortly. Look for links to the country pages soon. Also of interest, is the franking label for World Tuberculosis Day. They don’t show up on most philately sites, but I liked them. I’m not a purist and enjoy plopping in all sorts of stamp related stuff.
Enjoy the stamps.

According to Virgil Hipólito Correia, and as mentioned on the page of this issue, “since the beginning of the metal ages, goldsmithing has been a privileged field of experimentation and a preferred means of producing prestigious objects: large solid gold jewels, which marked the end of the Bronze Age”. The Vatican 2021 stamps will see 20 sets released covering the usual Christian themes plus a few of a broader interest topics. The Vatican doesn’t offer a lot of different formats or a wealth of details, with the bulk of their issues being single stamps and the odd souvenir sheet. The lack of postmarks is a continuing letdown. As a collector of cancels, I’m always looking for something interesting. The Vatican is missing the boat on this. On the upside, they offer high quality scans of all their material so it’s fun to zoom in and examine the details.
If you enjoy coins & stamps, then the Vatican will be a treasure trove for you. I’m playing around with the idea of including a few of the coins when there is a connection to a specific stamp. The Dante Alighieri coin and stamp set might look nice here. I know it’s not philatelic, but I suspect a few of my readers might enjoy the little extras.
I am a disappointed with the Vatican Radio anniversary issue. When I read about the anniversary, I got excited. As an old radio person I was hoping for a vibrant, tribute to the original technology and maybe changes over the years. What we have is a bit of a flabby sheet, in pastel pink, that doesn’t convey a strong identity or impression. They could have done much more. I’m hoping they do a better job with the 450th anniversary of Caravaggio’s birth and Dante stamps.

[The artist} of the two paintings is Adam Piekarski, a young homeless Polish painter who frequents the showers that Pope Francis has opened near the colonnade of St. Peter’s so that all pilgrims entering the Basilica can come across this new service. To portray the Magi, the author wanted to be inspired by his companions of misfortune. Two are more or less recognizable, the third is not, since it represents them all. With this small initiative, Vatican philately wanted to make the Nativity of the Lord more concrete by promoting the redemption of these disadvantaged brothers and sisters of ours. Argentina 2021 stamps may not be plentiful, but Correo Argentino makes up for that in quality.
Three celebrations kick off the 2021 issuing year, starting with the amazing Astor Piazzolla. Renowned composer and musician, Piazzolo is honoured with a cover & special postmark to commemorate his birth. From there Argentina moves onto a pioneer flight & a bicentennial for the National police force. I’m not happy with the size of the stamp images I was able to round up, so look for updates later in the year.
But now, the subject that is nearest and dearest to my heart – pioneer flights. One stamp excites me. And I mean, REALLY EXCITES ME. It’s the 100th anniversary of flight across Andes by Adrienne Bolland.

Adrienne Bolland was hired by aircraft designer René Caudron, originally as office staff. Her spirit & incorrigible sense of adventure led Cauldron to move her from the office to flying aircraft. In 1921, he sent her to South America to showcase his Caudron G.3, a WW1 era reconnaissance airplane.
Crossing the Andes was not part of the plan
Bolland made the decision to fly across the Andes while on the ship bound for Argentina (along with 2 Caudron biplanes). It was a “seat of her pants” plan and a dangerous one. Only one other pilot had successfully made the trip, Argentine Army Lieutenant Luis Cenobio Candelaria in 1918. He achieved this in a Morane-Saulnier Parasol and, in my opinion, doesn’t get the attention he so richly deserves. These were true pioneer flights by trail blazing pilots.
How amazing a pilot was she? Bolland flew across the Andes without a map, or a compass to guide her and only 40 hours flight time under her belt. The reliable Caudron travelled at 50 km (80 mph) per hour, and flew to 7,000 metres (22,965.8793 ft) over the Aconcagua, in an open cockpit. She was a woman of determination, grit and talent.
Correo Argentino has issued a stamp, FDC and an information booklet that I’d love to get my hands on for my pioneer aviation collection. Argentina has done a great job in designing the set.
Here’s a video from Air France celebrating Adrienne Bolland’s career. Narration is in French, but really, it doesn’t matter. You get to see some smashing visuals of her fight across the Andes.
Oh and a little known fact about Mme Bolland, she set a world record for the number of loops in an airplane – 212 loopings in 72 minutes. I feel airsick just thinking about it.

Adrienne Bolland (1895-1975)
Centenary of the first crossing of the Andes by a female pilot

1 stamp, Information booklet, FDC
I am currently searching for a supersized scan of all three items.
Frenchwoman Adrienne Bolland crossed the Andes mountain range on April 1, 1921. She was only 21 years old, and had just 40 hours of flight time. Her feat would make her an aviation legend and a source of inspiration for her successors. “Aviation, like so many other practices, was historically reserved for men. However, there were and are women who have been able to overcome with courage and success the limits established in the different eras,” explained Vanina Busniuk.

The 2021 Serbian stamps offer some real treats for the eye. I spent a lot of time cruising through the Serbian Post Office site. Not, for a change, because I was hopelessly looking for information, but because it was well organised, and the stamp designs were so fun to explore. I dug deeper and deeper into the archives, enjoying everything.
What really struck me is the way Serbian designers incorporated colours from their stamps into the First Day Covers. Instead of the usual white envelope, the covers became a canvas. I’ve become especially fond of graphic artist and designer Boban Savić’s work. His Lunar New Year series is a good example of using the cover as canvas:

There is an amazing continuity to each FDC design. The colours, all the elements, the cancel, they all flow together. Occasionally, he also slips in a bit of cheekiness, like my favourite the rat for 2020’s Lunar New Year and 2019’s pig.
If you enjoy FDCs then Serbia needs to be on the top of your list. They also offer great thematic treats such as military, architecture, science, art and wildlife. The covers are exquisite.
Cancels & maxi cards
If you are a cancel collector, then Serbia is a rich hunting ground. Serbia Post makes it easy to track cancels. They keep an archive of material dating to 2013. The cancels are well designed and appealing. Last Easter’s cancel is a good example of the quality:

Easter 2020
A couple maxi cards will be issued this year. The first will be in April, Tourism in Serbia, and later in the year the Stamp Day issue will come with one maxi card to celebrate the event. Last year’s Nikola Tesla’s series was outstanding. It ticked a couple of collecting boxes: cancels, science, history, maxi cards.

Designer Nadežda Skočajić used rich, earthy colours that made the subject pop. Now you see why I spent so much time wandering the virtual halls of the Serbian post office. Not quite sure what it is about Serbian artists that has me enthralled. It’s more than the topic. If I figure out what it is, I’ll share it with you. In the meantime, just enjoy the work.

Stamp Day – 150 years since sending the first Serbian postcard

1 stamp, sheet of 25, FDC, cancel
I think this is the single most awesome dragon stamp & FDC ever! It’s AMAZING.
First Serbian postcard, popularly called ”Zmaj” (Dragon), was sent by Jovan Manojlović on 19th of May 1871 from Vienna, from the editorial board of the newspaper ”Zmaj” to Sombor, to the address of a lawyer Dimitrije Manojlović. It was written in Serbian language, in Cyrillic. The postcard was printed on a cardboard of 155 mm x 105 mm format, in the coloured copper engraving technique, done by the Vienna typographer and carver Rudolf Schürer von Waldheim at the beginning of 1871. The postcard was ordered by the editorial board of the satirical newspaper ”Zmaj”, which was one of the first and the best edited humorous newspapers in Serbian language. It was the reason why its founder and editor-in-chief, poet Jovan Jovanović was nicknamed Zmaj. This satirical newspaper was founded by Jovan Jovanović in 1864, and the name ”Zmaj” is a play on words, since May 3 was the date of the May Assembly in 1848 (in Cyrillic 3. мај – Змај).
Only one known postcard is known to survive.

Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos (1921 – 1987)
Trained in art history and philosophy, and known as an influential critic and curator in what was then Communist Zagreb, Mangelos (a pseudonym of the late Dimitrije Bašičević) offers a distinct approach to language as an aesthetic material. Unlike his Conceptualist contemporaries in the West, who came to this subject as the logical conclusion of modernist reduction and dematerialization, the artist adapted painted and drawn words in different languages as a way to extend his philosophical reflections into the material world, a physical counterpart to abstract thinking. His practice was essentially concerned with introspection, note-taking as an art form. Galerie Martin Janda – Artforum International

Joseph Beuys (1921 – 1986)
Beuys’s insistence on the fundamentally democratic nature of human creativity suggested that every fully thinking and feeling person is, by definition, an artist, has left a widely influential and creative legacy since his death in 1986. While Beuys had always made an impact on his fellow Fluxus colleagues since the early 1960s, he would ultimately come to play a larger role in lending credence to the notion, increasingly popular since the mid 1990s, that art should address social, political, and related concerns by blurring the boundaries between its own practice, as a professional discipline, and everyday reality. Christmas 2021

2 stamps, FDC, cancel, 2 sheets of 25
… the Orthodox celebrate it on January 7th, and the Catholic on December 25th, but its message remains the same – the message of peace and love.
We celebrate Christmas for three days. It is primarily family holiday, and there are numerous traditions and customs regarding Christmas. On the day before Christmas and Christmas Eve, the yule log is being brought into house, cresset lit and hay with hidden candies, prunes, walnuts, sugar and coins, spread all over the house. The hay is a symbol of the manger in which Christ was born. The yule log represents longevity and substance of Christianity, as well as of the warmth of the love Christ brought to us when he was born and arrived to the Earth. On the very day of the Christmas, early in the morning the church bells of all Orthodox temples are ringing, announcing the nativity of Christ. People go to church to attend Christmas liturgy and they all greet each other by “Christ has been born” and “Indeed he has”. Пригодна издања – 2021 – еФилателија (posta.rs)
