Uruguay’s 2021 stamps and cancels are interesting. I like a country that offers lots of cancels to chase and Uruguay scratches that itch. Not only does Correo Uruguayo issue a postmark for each stamp, they have a couple of special cancels. Cataloging them was fun 😎.
Many of the links I’ve posted are not in English, but that shouldn’t be an obstacle for any collector. I have an app installed that translates automatically for me. I highly recommend every stamp collector do the same. Yes, the translations are often wonky, but they are useable.
Lots of histories of the country abound on the internet, but I’m not sure how good many are. I’m taking a trip to the Reference Library next week to find some good books. If I find one I like, I’ll share it with you. In the meantime, if you have a good book or site to share, please drop me a note in the comments. I’m sure other stamp collectors would as thrilled.
But, what about Uruguay’s 2021 stamps?
I forgot how magical Uruguay’s first stamps are. The famous “Diligencia” and later “Montevideo Suns” don’t get nearly the universal admiration they should. A unique set of stamps for the 1800s.
Topics for this year include quite a few strong women who have made a difference, endangered bees, the Olympics, the Lunar New Year and yes penguins. We have penguins.
And cancels?
Lots of choice when it comes to cancel hunting. The best? This quirky beast by Álvaro Rodríguez.
I know it’s for a restaurant and I’m pretty sure it’s this one Es Mercat – The best fish restaurant in Montevideo – Guru’Guay (guruguay.com). The cancel falls under the category of “special postmarks”, which is something like Germany’s “self-promotion postmarks”, cancels that are sponsored by businesses or organisations. No stamp is issued with them, so finding the cancels takes a lot of effort. This one? Oh it would so worth having.
The best official cancel comes with the Beneficial Insects stamp by Daniel Pereyra.
The detailed clover leaves make this a great one.
I am looking forward to the rest of the year. On to the 2021 collection.

Bicentennial of the birth of Anita Garibaldi
1 stamp, cancel
While the figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi is widely known and often admired for his fierce personality and his role in the unification of Italy, another figure, very close to him, is mostly ignored. No wonder, it’s a woman (!). Anita Garibaldi, Giuseppe’s wife, was such a profound inspiration for him, and a big personality in her own right, a revolutionary herself, who fought alongside Giuseppe in South America and in Italy.
