Uruguay 2022 cancel jackpot!

by | May 21, 2022

Seeing Daniel Pereyra’s Chinese New Year stamp kick off Uruguay’s yearly program is beginning to feel like a tradition. The New Year cycle began 8 years ago with his 2014 Year of the Horse set. I suspect an article is coming soon comparing his different interpretations of each Lunar New Year animal. I’ll post a link here when I get around to it.  Pereyra’s sinewy, fierce tiger is his best yet to date. To truly appreciate his tiger, you need to look at the entire sheet, not just the single stamp.

Year of the Tiger Uruguay 2022

One nice thing about writing up yearly lists is the chance to revisit a favourite or two from the previous year. That means you get to see this bad boy one more time:

Álvaro Rodríguez El Mercat cancel Uruguay's 2021 stamps

The octopus was created for the Es Mercat seafood restaurant in Montevideo. I can’t help but think designer Álvaro Rodríguez must have had field day with this design. It’s perfect! If you collect cancels, Uruguay has an exciting catalogue to explore. They have an archive going back to 2007 Special Postmark – Correo Uruguayo. There are 2 categories – special postmarks that have no stamp to accompany them and FDC postmarks. Many still have their press releases attached. It’s a great link to bookmark for future research.

For many of the writeups on this page, I relied on Uruguay’s post office press releases. Correo Uruguayo notes are detailed and translate well. Kudos to the staff for offering up so much information. It’s a lot of work!.

Enjoy Uruguay!

Noctiluca (Noctiluca scintillans)

Noctyluca is a dinoflagellate, marine, unicellular and flagellate organism. They are microscopic, rounded to oblong in shape, typically measuring less than 1 mm (~0.5 mm) and have two flagella. This species is characterized by its bioluminescence,… Bioluminescence is supposed to have defense functions against predators.

Noctiluca scintillans is one of the most evolutionarily oldest dinoflagellates that can produce light…. They are common on the oceanic coasts of Uruguay. Stamps – Correo Uruguayo

Portuguese frigate (Physalia physalis) and Velela (Velella velella)

Both species are marine polymorphic colonial animals, belonging to the hydrozoan group (Hydrozoa), which inhabit warm waters around the world. They are carnivorous organisms.

The Portuguese frigate, also known as “Portuguese caravel” or “Portuguese warman”, is very feared by bathers because it produces very powerful toxins. In principle this animal can be confused with a jellyfish or living water, but it is very different.

The Portuguese frigate is made up of many differently shaped individuals who perform different functions, hence it is a polymorphic colonial organism…

The velela, also known as “sea sail”, is a small colonial hydrozoan of intense blue color. This coloration provides protection from predators by being confused with the color of the sea. It is approximately 2 to 10 cm long. It has a floating organ or pneumatophore, with a triangular dorsal sail (hence its name) for propulsion on the surface of the sea, thanks to the effect of the wind. They inhabit temperate and tropical waters around the world…

Having no means of locomotion and being at the mercy of the currents, it is common to observe massive strandings of sails on the beaches.

500 Years of the Return of the Nao Victoria

The original Nao Victoria set sail 1519 under the command of Juan Sebastian Elcano, embarking on a voyage that would take its crew around the world. The Victoria was the first to circumnavigate the world, sailing back into port on 1522.

The replica ship was built in 1991 after “an exhaustive study, based on documentary sources, chronicles, nautical treaties from the 16th century and iconography of the era, allowed to accurately reproducing the original ship’s main dimensions, spars, sails, and equipment.” (The Nao Victoria – Buy tickets and visit the Nao Victoria (fundacionnaovictoria.org)).  It was the 1st replica (built with original specs) to circumnavigate the world. It now acts as a sort of ambassador for seafaring history as both a museum and active training ship.
