David Dovlatyan and Rem Saakyan return to helm the Armenia 2022 stamp program. Dovlatyan and Saakyan are the dynamos behind many of Armenia’s best designs. Among the outstanding issues in 2021 was, (of course) traditional food with Dovlatyan’s Ghapama set. It combines great looking food, a fun cancel and classic artistry.
Postcard collectors will be happy to search among Armenia’s numerous issues of postcards and maxicards. This year’s program started with 4 new postcards covering art and history. If you enjoy exploring new artists, then you’ll love Armenia’s postcards.
One big change this year, will be the inclusion of names posted in Armenian. With an uptick in visits from Armenia, I thought this might make reading the page a bit nicer. As I’ve stated in previous posts, often names don’t translate well into English, so I’m pushing to include information in the original language. Right now, I’m focused on names, but as the year progresses, look for more details in Armenian. As always, if you think of a better translation or correction, I’d be happy to hear from you.

Bronze winged statue from 8th & 7th BCE Kingdom of Van. Statue is held by the State Ermitage of St. Petersburg.
According to one hypothesis about the founding of the kingdom of Van, it originated in the first century B.C.E. From the 13th to the 13th centuries, on the foundation of the Urarat-Urart tribal union mentioned south of Lake Vanuatu. Currently, it is commonly believed that the kingdom’s original territory is the pool of Lake Vanuatu, with which the kingdom’s principal identification, Biennial, is linked to it. and in science, the state is also known as the House (After the name of the kingdom.”) Armenian Encyclopedia
Վանի թագավորություն sometimes translates to Kingdom of Vienna, which can cause a lot of confusion when doing research. This is a fascinating period of history to discover. Goddess Astghik Աստղիկ
Astghik was an ancient goddess of love, beauty and water.
Astghik (aka Astlik), the goddess of beauty and love whose name means “little star” (translated from Beldi, the Syrian goddess). Associated with doves and roses, she had a festival dedicated to her at the beginning of summer. One story involving Astghik tells of her habit of bathing in a stream each night. On one occasion a group of local young men, eager to glimpse the naked goddess, lit a fire on a hill to see Astghik better. The goddess foiled the plan by causing a great mist to settle over the area which henceforth acquired the name “Plain of Mush” after the Armenian word mshoush, meaning mist. … born in Constantinople in 1872, the son of a poor silversmith. He became a teacher and writer, contributing to various periodicals poems, fairy tales, literary studies and criticisms. He brought out a successful drama, was appointed teacher of the history of literature in the Central School, and became editor of a literary and artistic magazine. In 1895 he settled in Paris, where he has devoted himself to making the Armenians better known in Europe. He is an indefatigable worker, and has published, in French, a number of volumes containing translations of Armenian literature, ancient and modern, besides editing “Anahit,” a literary and critical magazine which he founded.
