Some of the designers and engravers who worked on the Monaco 2021 stamps may be familiar to some readers. Design luminaires Elsa Catelin, Sophie Beaujard, Martin Mörck and the grandmaster of French engraving Pierre Albuisson made appearances throughout the year. It’s always exciting to see high quality engraving pop up. As you can tell, I’m a huge fan of intaglio stamps, so Monaco was a bit of a treat for my eyes.
Joining them is designer I came across earlier in the year, Russian artist/sculpture Elena Zaïka. She started Monaco’s year off with two stamps celebrating famous clowns. Although I’m one of those who never quite “got” clowns, I think Zaïka’s Yuri Nikulin Centenary stamp is a powerhouse filled with vibrant colours and tradition. It’s a great tribute to this still popular and much loved figure.
Car enthusiasts have some interesting stamps as well. The annual Legendary Racing Cars set features the work of two well known automotive artists, Fabrice Monaci and Michel Verrando. I’ve included links to more of their works below. The second offering is part of the Movies Filmed in Monaco series – The Infernal Circle, Henry Hathaway’s 1955 film about race car drivers. Ok, not a great view of the cars, but a good collectable.
The immensely popular EUROPA’s annual is here too. The 2021 topic Endangered National Wildlife produced a great year of stamps. You can see all of them on Europa page.
First Day Covers & cancels
I have to confess, I find Monaco’s covers disappointing. The same generic cover is used over and over, with no tie to the actual theme. I think I’ve been spoilt by Serbia’s magnificent covers including my favourite of the year, the Petar Manojlović dragon postcard FDC. Serbian artists use the entire envelope as their canvas so the FDC contributes to the overall theme. Unfortunately Monaco’s covers seem to be a bit of an afterthought. Check out the Serbian cover 2021 Serbian stamps – a visual feast and skip down to the Stamp Day issue and let me know what you think.
Monaco is redeemed by their cancels. FDCs are graced with some decent postmarks that, although not highly detailed, are still very collectable.
So, grab your espresso, settle in and enjoy a trip to Monaco through their stamps.

Åland Post must be one of the most organised postal services in the world. Not only do they issue their yearly stamp program well in advance, they also include scans. 11 stamps will be released in 2022 with the first arriving in February and the last October 20. A number of familiar themes return, starting with the tractors and ending with the Lunar New Year and Christmas issues.
One of the highlights, for me, is the appearance of gnomes. YES, WE HAVE GNOMES IN LITTLE RED HATS! This makes me unnaturally happy for some reason. Finnish artist Sami Saramäki’s Christmas Gnomes are … oh … I can’t help it.. so fricken adorable, I can’t stand it.
We also get a peak at next year’s Lunar New Year Cycle. It’ll be the Year of the Rabbit and Martin Mörck returns to design the 2022 set. The stamps feature mountain hares, native to the region, frolicking around the Havsvidden resort in Geta, northern Åland.
As well as the yearly themes, Åland Post also participates in the EUROPA and SEPAC competitions. This year’s EUROPA theme is Fairy Tales & stories. The Sjörå, the Mistress of the Lake is the topic. SEPAC’s 2022 theme explores Local Drinks and Åland features bottles of fresh squeezed sea-buckthorn juice. Sea-buckthorn is a deciduous shrub native to the islands. Not sure what it tastes like. If you’ve ever had any, drop a comment below and let us know.
I’ve already started filling in details about some of the stamps. More will come as the year progresses. The images here are preliminary. As each issue is released, better versions, FDCs, maxis and cancels will be released so I’ll plunk them in and update the entries.
As always, feel free to leave a comment and enjoy the fun. Don’t forget to stop in and see last year’s stamps.

SJÖRÅET – Sjörå, the Mistress of the Lake
The sjörå is a female water nymph who rules the sea and the lakes. Her beauty only extends to the front; from behind, she is a hollow stump. The sjörå, also known as mistress of the sea, is closely related to the mermaid. The water nymph has her own pots and pans of glittering copper that she scrubs by the lake shore, and she keeps her own livestock. The sjörå keeps a pike as a pet, so, be careful if you catch a particularly large pike! Åland-Post 2022

SEPAC – local drinks

1 stamp, sheet of 24, FDC, cancel
offset
This local drink is made of buckthorn berries.
Åland is one of the few areas in Finland where sea buckthorn grows in the wild. Sea buckthorn grows best on rocky and gravelly shores, where it grows in dense thickets. The branches are prickly, which makes it inconvenient to pick berries. Small orange-yellow berries, fleshy and sour, ripen in the fall. The Sepac stamp offers a vitamin bomb – sea buckthorn juice from Åland | www.alandstamps.com
Photographer Tiina Tahvanainen described how she took on this challenge:
I am always as proud when I get a stamp assignment and I love the still life filming. The challenge is to make everything match. Every little berry placement is important because the size of the stamp is so small. I sketched first on paper and I tried different accessories and variations. I decided to use many juice bottles that are over 100 years old. It was a bit of a sweat to get them to stay compact. I started in the middle of winter, so at first I could work with frozen berries, and at the very end I photographed berries in nature.

Tick research

1 stamp, FDC, cancel, sheets of 24
Borrelia burgdorferi is a bacterium that can be carried by ticks and is transmitted through a tick bite. The common wood tick, Ixodes ricinus, thrives in moist and shady places with dense undergrowth. The best way to protect yourself from ticks is to wear light-colored clothes when moving in damp terrain and to keep the lawn short. Less than 10 percent of ticks carry bacteria, and infection does not always occur either. The risk is almost non-existent if you manage to remove the tick within 24-48 hours of the bite.
Åland has a high risk of contracting diseases spread by ticks, which are widespread in the world and have also become a public health problem in both the United States and Europe. Lyme disease is the most common disease caused by ticks. The main focus of the research in Åland has been to find a reliable method to verify active borreliosis.
Illustrator Peter Bergström thought for a long time whether to accept the challenge of illustrating this bloodthirsty bug: “I hesitated for a long time. The topic is difficult and not particularly descriptive. However, Åland Post finally convinced me that the topic is important.”

There’s a lot to see with Switzerland’s 2021 stamp designs. As a Canadian collector, I have to confess, I wish Canada Post would show the innovation other post offices are using in their stamp designs. Austria and Switzerland both issued stamps on none stamp material, creating unique mementos of specific themes/events. This stamp, Commitment to Art, was printed on linen, representing a blank canvas for the art under construction theme.

Scan the little QR code on the sheet and you’ll be taken to Swiss Post’s web page that explains why the stamps are blank.
Two more stamps are worth special mention because they utilize augmented reality. Both the 100th anniversary of insulin and 150 years internment of Bourbaki’s army unlock secondary images when scanned with the Swiss Post app. With the Insulin stamp, the app reveals the insulin structure in 3D. The Bourbaki stamp reveals the rest of Edouard Castres’ painting.
I had a discussion with another collector a few months back who dismissed this as “gimmicky” and cheapening the hobby. I have to disagree. I love this type of innovation in design. It reaches out to a young, digitally aware audience who just may become hooked on stamps. As well, using augmented reality allows designers to pack more information into the stamps. With a quick scan, info is unlocked and ready to be examined.
Annual themes & new ideas
Swiss Post issues a number of re-occurring themes. Collectors can look forward to scooping the popular Pro Patria and Pro Juventute issues as well as this year’s EUROPA competition. Jürg Glauser’s Taxis and Thurin entry score a second place finish in 2020. This year’s EUROPA focuses on 2 endangered butterflies, with some spectacular artwork.
Late November will see Switzerland’s first entry into the Crypto Stamp category. It’ll be interesting to see where Swiss Post goes with cryptos. They could be nothing more than a flash in the pan, but given how quickly the Austrian crypto stamps sell out, I wouldn’t take any bets on this.

A mail and B mail

2 stamps, FDC, cancel
The aim was to make the small format look maximum. The letters “A” and “B” are reduced to their hallmarks, i.e. the letter interiors. These prominent internal forms created a formal relationship between the two tokens. The warm red and orange tones of the A-Post brand stand for liveliness and urgency, while the cooler blue and green tones of the B-Post brand convey peace. 5 January 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of Switzerland’s greatest authors. Friedrich Dürrenmatt reached an audience of millions with his darkly satirical plays and crime novels, which continue to be read and performed all over the world. He was also a towering moral authority who turned a critical lens on his homeland, and left behind a significant body of paintings which are on public display in beautiful surroundings at the Dürrenmatt Centre in Neuchâtel. 1 stamp, FDC, cancel
In 1871, 87,000 soldiers and 12,000 horses of the French Bourbaki army fled across the border into Switzerland in Les Verrières. Switzerland carried out a unique, humanitarian mission, in which the recently founded Swiss Red Cross had its first large-scale operation. The internment was captured a few years later by the artist Edouard Castres on a 112 meter long and 10 meter (originally 14 meters) high circular painting. The 2021 Swedish stamps offered a few surprises tucked into their designs. I had some fun looking over them and found myself chuckling at one. Göteborg celebrated it’s 400th anniversary with an ambitious project that saw 10 local artists illustrate various landmarks and buildings from around the city. The aim was to create a modern map of Göteborg with sites familiar to current residents. Here’s the one that brought on the giggles:

Do you see the hamsters? I looked at this stamp for a few seconds before it registered what I was looking at. Then I spotted the hamster on a bike and lost it. I scurried off to check out the artist and discovered all the illustrations Mikel Nilsson created for the project have little animals enjoying various aspects of city life. This particular rodent sighting takes place at Röda Sten, a promenade that includes stores, restaurants and a concert hall. Although just one of his animal vignettes made it onto a stamp, you really should go check out the others. They include cats roaming Haga, birds taking over a creperie and well, just go see the snails. You won’t be disappointed. And I so want to visit Göteborg now.
Sweden was the adopted home of the great stamp and banknote engraver Czesław Słania. This year was the 100th anniversary of his birth, and a number of countries created stamps to honour him. Słania was a powerhouse in stamp design, with 1070 stamps from 28 countries to his credit. He also engraved banknotes for countries from around the world, including Canada, Argentina and Lithuania, to name a few. Polish designer Marzanna Dąbrowska designed both Poland and Sweden’s September stamps.
The final stamp I want to draw your attention to is the January Valuable Nature stamp that starts the year off.
Henning Trollbäck included a touching tribute to Greta Thunberg’s fight for change. It’s a nicely understated stamp. I missed her the first scan of the 2021 issues. When I took a close up look, I knew instantly who the girl on the cliff is.

Valuable Nature | Europa 2021 – Endangered Wildlife

5 stamps in booklet format, 1 coil stamp (Europa Toad issue), FDC, cancel, collector’s sheet
The European Green Toad (also called the Green Spotted) was Sweden’s entry into the annual Europa contest.
In recent years, the European green toad has gone from vulnerable to critically endangered status and there are now only a few remaining in the Skåne och Blekinge regions. Eutrophication and drainage are two of several reasons for its decline. In order to save the species in Sweden, European green toads are bred to be transplanted, but it is also necessary to restore and preserve the habitat in which the toads live. Pg 1. Occasionally I mention how fun a certain country is to explore. I’m pretty uncritical of many stamps, because well, I simply love looking at them and learning something about the country they come from. To me, it’s an expedition to a new place. Sometimes I run across a country that spotlights local artists and crafts that makes me sit up and say “hey!”. It’s one of those “why do we not know more about this art?” moments, and Morocco presented a couple instances this past year.
First, designers for Barid Al-Maghrib (BAM) created some interesting stamp & FDC combos. Of particular note is the anniversary issue for the Ra II Expedition by Mohammed El Ouanti and the double stamp set for the May Screens issue by El Batoul Bargach & H’Hammed Jirari. I wish I could tell you more about the artists and designers, but I hit a stone wall while researching them. If anyone from Morocco happens to have links (doesn’t matter what language) to any of the designers or topics, I’d appreciate you passing this along to me.
Next, the July Euromed stamp information has been fleshed out a bit more. I found better images and some decent information to include. And If you are a lover of art, don’t miss the July tribute to Abbes Saladi, 1950-1992. The painting is intriguing and found few light weight links for you. Hope you enjoy exploring Morocco’s history and art as much as I did.

Citadels – Joint Issue with the Dominican Republic

2 stamps, FDC, cancel, sheet of 10
Kasbah des Oudayas / قصبة الأوداية in Rabat and Alcázar de Cólon in Santo Domingo.
Built on a high cliff overlooking the Bouregreg River in Rabat, the Kasbah des Oudayas, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, was built in the tenth century by the Almoravids as a defense fort. Calif Almohad Abdelmoumen rebuilt it to serve as a royal palace and platform for attacking the Iberian island. A true architectural jewel of Arab-Muslim style, the palace was also the former home of Sultan Moulay Ismail in Rabat. Since 1915, it has housed the National Jewelry Museum.
The “Alcázar de Cólon”, a Gothic and Renaissance palace, overlooking plaza de España on one side and the Ozama River on the other, was completed around 1512. It is one of the most popular museums in the Colonial City and is also the most impressive in architecture. It was once the home of Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus, and his wife, María de Toledo, niece of King Ferdinand of Spain. EUROMED – earrings with rams horns called “KHORAS KBACH”

1 stamp, FDC, cancel
The stamp reproduces the work of the artist Faissal BEN KIRAN who designed the “KHORAS” earrings using a watercolor technique on paper.
[The earing is based on} a thousand-year-old tradition that has evolved following the influences of civilizations that have succeeded each other in Morocco. City jewelry is usually made of gold or gold silver. For a long time, they are finely carved and decorated with precious stones, in Fez, Meknes, Rabat, Tangier, Marrakech and in the north in Tetouan… Rural jewelry is made of silver in various shapes, drawing its origins from the histories of the tribes. This is how Barid Al-Maghrib opted, as part of this program, for the representation of the earrings composing, among other things, the jewels that complete the outfit of the bride of Tangier or that of Tetouan. These are ram horned loops called “KHORAS KBACH” or “KHORAS ÂAMARA”. They are very ornate loops, precious by the material and the know-how. The upper part carved in rinceaux inlaid with precious stones and, the lower part begins with a cube also set, where hangs a pendant lessed with pendants and ends with a half-ring that resembles a ram’s horn. These earrings are so heavy that they are connected to the hairstyle by a chain to support them.

The Battle of Annual was fought on July 22, 1921, at Anwal in Spanish Morocco, between the Spanish Army of Africa and Berber combatants of the Rif region during the Rif War.
