The Vatican’s 2022 stamp program will issue 21 sets. This will include 3 joint issues, 9 anniversary or celebration stamps, 5 annuals and finally, 4 stamps for their yearly theme. For some reason, I thought this was a larger number than previous year, but no, it’s actually the smallest program since 2008. Go figure.
What topics can collectors look for in the coming year? Well, a couple of interesting ones. First, my favourite theme of the year is the EUROPA 2022: Stories and Myths competition. As of publication date for this article, the Vatican hadn’t announced what their stamps will cover. We’ll just have to wait. The other stamps of note will be a celebration of Giovanni Battista de Rossi. de Rossi (1822-1894) was the Italian archeologist who uncovered the ancient Christian Catacombs of Callixtus. Good history content coming our way! You can get a jump start on this topic here The Catacombs of Saint Callixtus. The Christian Catacombs of Rome (catacombesancallisto.it).
Amoris Laetitia Family is the theme for the Vatican’s 2022 stamp program. Roughly translated, it means Joy of Love Experienced by Families. The issues will cover:
- Pontificate of Pope Francis MMXXII
- Easter of Resurrection MMXXII
- X World Meeting of Families
- Philatelic envelope 2022
And for the rest of the year, no dates were available as of today (Nov. 19, 2021) so the following list of topics will not be in chronological order.
- Philatelic envelope 2022 decade for the restoration of the ecosystem in the wake of Laudato Si’ – Year I
- Europe 2022: Stories and Myths
- An ideal pilgrimage around the earth on the way to the Jubilee 2025: Asia
- Pope Francis’ travels in the world – year 2021
- Christmas MMXXII
- Ii anniversary of Statio Orbis
- Bicentenary of the birth of Giovanni Battista de Rossi
- 1,900th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Martian
- Fifth centenary of the election of Pope Adrian VI
- Centenary of the Pediatric Dispensary of Santa Marta
- 150th anniversary of the birth and 70th anniversary of the death of Blessed Father Paolo Manna
- 3rd centenary of the proclamation of Saint Isidore of Seville as Doctor of the Church
- Postcards: II centenary of the death of Antonio Canova
- Aerogram: IV centenary of the first collective canonization (1622-2022)
- 150th anniversary of the birth of St. Louis Orione (joint with Italy and Argentina)
- Centenary of the Concordat between the Holy See and Latvia (joint with Latvia)
- 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Mongolia (joint with Mongolia)
New issues will appear on this page, so if you collect Vatican stamps, or are simply interested in seeing them, bookmark this page, or sign up for my newsletter. Go to the main page and use the sign up form on the middle, right of the home page.

Only Dutch Pope and last non-Italian pope until John Paul II. Adrian lived 1459-1523. There are a lot of resources on Pope Adrian. If you want a brief thumbnail sketch, Pope Adrian VI – Wikipedia offers an acceptable start. There is a decent bibliography at the bottom of the article to use as a springboard for further reading.
Adrian VI was born in Utrecht in 1459 as Adriaen Florisz Boeyens. He was elected pope in January 1522 but only held the office for a year, from 31 August 1522 until his death on 14 September 1523…The Rijksmuseum portrait appears to have been based on a commemorative medal in which the pope is depicted in a similar way. The name of the designer of the medal and the period in which it was made are unknown.

Domenico Fontana (1543 – 1607) – Swiss engineer & architect
Fontana designed the Vatican Library (1587–90), the Acqua Felice (1587), and the present Lateran Palace, built on the ruins of the old medieval palace. He collaborated with Giacomo della Porta on the completion of St. Peter’s dome (1588–90) from Michelangelo’s model. His most famous undertaking was the removal of the Egyptian obelisk (brought to Rome in the 1st century CE) from its place in the circus of the Vatican and its erection in front of St. Peter’s (1586). Accused of misappropriating public money, Fontana was dismissed from his post in 1592 by Pope Clement VIII. He then became Royal Engineer at Naples to the count of Miranda (1592) and built the Palazzo Reale (1600–02). Domenico Fontana | Italian architect | Britannica
This pair of stamps is devoted to the Egyptian obelisk.
… architect Domenico Fontana [was] entrusted the task … of removing the obelisk from the original site, of its transport [and errection)] in St. Peter’s Square, … It took 900 men and 140 horses to complete it. Also, in order to facilitate … raising the 327-ton monolith, the Pope issued an edict which forbade anyone to speak or enter the enclosure around the work area. The offenders … would be punished with death. Everything went smoothly until, on 10 September 1586, at the very end of the operation, a Ligurian sailor, … Bresca da San Remo, realizing that the ropes holding the obelisk were about to break due to excessive tension, he shouted regardless of the papal warning: “Water on the ropes”. In fact, he knew very well that hemp, when wet, becomes shorter and more elastic. The architect immediately welcomed the suggestion and was able to happily conclude the work. The sailor was pardoned by the Pope, who not only honored him with the title of captain of the first papal regiment of the line, but also granted his family the privilege of supplying the Vatican with branches used for Palm Sunday. Annullo postale speciale in occasione (vaticanstate.va)
Design: Images used in the set are details of a fresco from the Sistine Rooms of the Vatican Museums, (created 1588 -1590) by C. Nebbia and G. Guerra. They portray the Egyptian obelisk being moved to St. Peter’s Square

X World Meeting of Families

10th World Meeting’s theme will be Family love: vocation and way of holiness. The event runs from June 22 to 26, 2022.
From the Vatican website:
The Vatican leaflet dedicated to the event reproduces the Wedding at Cana in Galilee, a symbolic work of this Meeting, created by Jesuit Father Marko Ivan Rupnik. The author of the painting hopes that through this small image we can “understand that for us Christians the family is the expression of the Sacrament of Marriage and this totally changes its meaning, because a sacrament always implies transformation”. At the center of the composition are depicted Jesus and a female figure representing the Church and Humanity. On the left we find spouses with their faces covered by a veil, because the mystery of marriage was fully revealed by the Apostle Paul when in the Letter to the Ephesians he exclaimed: “This mystery is great; I say this in reference to Christ and the Church!” (Eph 5:32). The apostle then, like the table master of the wedding at Cana, pours the new wine that gushed from the side of Christ to the families who, looking at the image, become participants in the scene. 2022 Faroe Islands stamps begin the year with a set of franking labels. The series, Public Transportation, features Janus Guttesen’s artwork. It’ll be a fun year for fans of Martin Mörck and Anker Eli Petersen. Mörck returns on January 14 for Margrethe II’s anniversary and Petersen helms the EUROPA 2022 design. Not sure what tale Faroe Islands post office has in store for us, but this year’s theme, Europa 2022: Myths and Legends, has already produced interesting stamps. I’ll be posting them all on the Europa 2022 page early in January, so keep a look out for a link.
A quick look at some of the topics for the Faroe Island 2022 program reveals:
- HM Margrethe II – 50 years as Queen
- William Morris who visited the islands in 1871
- Location used in filming
- Aurora borealis
- 1st book printed in Faroese
- SEPAC
- Christmas 2022
But … no puffins. Oh well.

Færöiske Qvæder Om Sigurd Fafnersbane of hans Æt by H.C. Lyngbye was published in 1822.
Faroese Heroic Ballads of Sigurd, the Slayer of the Dragon Fafnir and His Kindred.
The text was a transcript of a ballad derived from the extensive Faroese oral tradition, where songs are performed by a
lead singer in a closed chain of dancers chanting along to the chorus. This Faroese chain dance is a combination of narratives,
melodies and bodily expressions, where the lead singer through dramatic interaction with the dancers chants the
main lyrics. …
H.C. Lyngbye, who came from Østhimmerland in Denmark, was a newly trained priest from Copenhagen and also a classicist
and natural scientist with an interest in botany. This led him on a scientific journey to the Faroe Islands in 1817, where
he mainly studied seaweed, but also collected a lot of other Faroese material.
In keeping with his antiquarian and linguistic interest, he noted down parts of the extensive oral Faroese ballad tradition,
among them 164 quatrains chanted by an old man in Thorshavn. On his return to Copenhagen, Lyngbye showed
these quatrains to the theologian and ballad researcher P.E. Müller, who was surprised and excited to find that motifs in …
the poems had its origins in the famous Nibelungenlied, Edda poetry and Völsungasaga, the Saga of the Volsungs.

- Svínoy – Island of pigs
- Mykines island
Svinoy is island on the NE corner of the Faroes. Legend has it, it was once a floating island, it would periodicaly come into view and then disappear in a cloud of fog. In the small village of Viðareiði, on the island of Viðoy a farmer owned a sow but no boar. Despite the lack of any boar on the island, she would disappear for brief periods of time and then reappear, pregnant. Islanders were curious as to how she became pregnant so they created a plan to find out where the pig vanished.
The next time the sow was seen wandering from the village, they tied keys to its tail and followed. They were surprised to see the pig run into the sea and begin to swim north east. Puzzled as to where she was going, They leapt into boats and followed her to the mysterious island that was drifting northward. The sow swam to the island, with the islanders hot on her tail.
Once they found out the secret, they decided to anchor the island to the seabed and began to live there. The island was named Svinoy or Pig Island in honour of the swine who found her mate there.
Mykines island tells the tale of risi, a prehistoric giant who lived on the islands. This is an interesting origin story on how the Faroe Islands were formed. The tale goes that a giant liked the islands, but found them too small to live on. He began pulling the smaller islands together, joining some of them up to form a larger mass and others, in a close proximity. The only version I have is bad translation and has gaps in the story. When I find a better translation, I’ll fill in the rest of the story.
Designer: Anker Eli Petersen
Previous designs include the 2021 Anker Eli Petersen, 2004 The cruise on “Maria” 1854, 2003 Völuspá, 2001 Nordic myths and legends about light and darkness and 1998 Brynhild’s ballad.

Pitcairn postage stamps for 2021 are short & sweet. Only two sets, featuring QEII and Prince Philip, were issued. Normally, Pitcairn puts out between 5 and 6 sets but the pandemic threw the schedule to the winds. As well, the people who ran the Pitcairn Islands Philatelic Bureau for the last 16 year, retired September 2020. Louise and Russell Watson handed philatelic duties over to Tower Mint Limited of London, UK.
Tower Mint joined in celebrating QEII’s 95th and mourning the death of Prince Philip, common themes through the Commonwealth in 2021. Hopefully, they return to the usual interesting stamps that made Pitcairn so fun to watch.

by catpaw | 11 Dec, 2021 | Stamps
When Belgium issued their preliminary list for the 2022 program, it didn’t disappoint. BPost can never be accused of resting on it’s laurels. Stamps this year will create pyramids, open windows, and look like coins and records. It’s a nice mix of traditional design and adventurous layouts.
There was a lot to love with the 2021 program. With so many beautiful designs, it was hard to narrow down the top ones for the year. But, after going back and forth many times, I finally settled on two. The first was Thierry de Cordier‘s NADA.
Artist de Cordier was given a free hand in designing the entire stamp. The black with silver leaf impression must have provoked a thrill when it arrived on a cover. I’m a bit envious of anyone who received on. When I first looked at this stamp, I was … puzzled by it. It proved to be a work of art that kept bringing me back to look it over, again and again. Not quite sure why I like. I just do. That’s the thing about art. Sometimes you can’t explain why something attracts you. It just does.
But the best of the year from Belgium was illustrator Marjike Meersman’s Tricolours in Nature.

The colours on this set are vibrant and striking. its hard to take your eyes off them. Even the spider is attractive, and coming from an arachnophobe, that is damned high praise. I was pleased to see Marjike Meersman return for 2022. October will see her new Vegetables series released. I enjoy her illustrations and I think it’s time to create a page on Meersman for the Designers index, don’t you?
Also returning for design duties are Myriam Voz and Guillaume Broux who team up for another edition of City Squares. This year features the city of Charleroi. Fans of Voz and Broux should be happy this year. They work their magic on another set Medicinal Plants as well as working with other artists and designers.
And no discussion of Belgium stamps is complete without a mention of the incredible Kris Maes. Kris’ Geometry in Nature series comes to an end after 5 years, with a look at hexagon shapes. If you like Maes, then make sure you check out the 2 moody & beautifully detailed EUROPA stamps for the yearly competition. This year’s theme is Myths & Legends and I think it may turn into one of Europa’s best to date. Yes, even better than the 2020 Ancient Postal Routes, which was near and dear to my heart.
Two stories are incorporated into Belgium’s entry – Saint-Hubert the Hunter and Brabo en de reus Antigoon.
This souvenir sheet would look good poster sized, mounted and hung on the wall. Talk about atmospheric! Maes is a true master of design.
I’ll have more thoughts on the 2022 stamp year as we go along. Be sure to come back periodically to see if anything has been added.

This is a unique set. When the souvenir sheet is assembled it becomes a pyramid.
“How do you approach such a project? He must first determine a very precise way of cutting”, confides to us Sven Bellanger.
“There are different ways to proceed in creating a pyramid of paper. But I opted for a cutout which made it possible to create a diptych: a postage stamp with an Egyptian amphora and presentation of the subject. Then there are four sections to bend to create the three-dimensional shape. Each of these sections have an Egyptian object from the collection of the Museum of Art and History from Brussels. The postage stamp on the base, with the black amphora, jump directly to the eyes.
The four other objects on the four sides of the pyramid are rather beige and marry therefore perfectly between them. Sven Bellanger Philanews 2022 No. 2

Together We Win!

2 stamps, souvenir sheet, FD sheet, 3 cancels
Artist and designer Davy Denduyver used a 90s grunge style for this set. He wrote ” I left the feeling of nostalgia that arouses in me with these postage stamp. This explains the small grunge touch, typical of my own youth.” He explained, in Philanews, that creating a work of art for such a small space created problems for him. He normally works on poster and large formats, so shrinking his art down to postage stamp size presented him with an interesting challenge. To achieve the effect he wanted, Denduyver broke his image into 2 stamps.
Designer: Davy Denduyver Davy Denduyver — Design & Direction
This is Denduyver’s first stamp for Belgium post:
“When I was asked to design a postage stamp, my first reaction was: “Holy shit! “. The thought had never even crossed my mind. could be a command for me. In this optics, it really was the dream job that I don’t didn’t even know it existed. by catpaw | 11 Dec, 2021 | Stamps
It took quite a while to pull together the 2021 stamps for Russia. I kept finding information about the topics, and couldn’t stop myself link hopping. It was all too fascinating. Russia is broken into two sections – Jan to June and July to Dec. to ensure the page loads quickly. A link to the second part will be posted at the bottom of the page when I’ve completed it.
What are the highlights for the January to June stamps? Hmm. There are a lot of interesting stamps to pick through. But, one of the stars for 2021 is Russia’s entry to the annual Europa competition – EUROPA National Endangered Wildlife – Persian Leopard. Ok, let’s be honest. Stick a cat on a stamp and I’m an immediate fan. But designer Vladimir Beltyukov’s set is highly collectable for a couple of reasons. The obvious is, the topic is hard to beat. Beautiful animal that was beautifully drawn. The second reason is the attractive maxi card and FDC. Beltyukov is a talented artist with a good sense of layout design. This detailed cancel is a perfect teaser for the January set.
Beltyukov returned in April, for what could be considered the best of 2021, Flora: Berries – blueberry, sea buckthorn, blackberry, gooseberry set. Beltyukov greatest design strength is his maxis and FDCs and his Flora sets are standouts and frame worthy.

Beltyukov is now on my watch list for future stamps. You’ll find more of his work scattered throughout the year and I’m looking forward to seeing more of his art and designs.
Let’s talk about information. Trying to source info on Russian artists and designers is not easy and that is reflected in the shameful lack of details I’ve posted. Dealing with translations and my lack of knowledge about Russian artists pretty much hampered searches. That doesn’t mean I’m going to stop, but it will take longer than normal to include details. I’ve enjoyed this first serious foray into modern Russian stamps so much, I now feel a mission of discovery coming on.
So, apologies beforehand on the lack of details re: designers. If you have information to share, I’m sure my audience would be grateful too, if you posted in the comments.
One last note. I’ve only posted one cancel from each set. Russia often issues postmarks from a variety of cities, using the same design.

Persian Leopard | thezooscientist
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Persian Leopards are critically in danger, as they are one of the most endangered feline subspecies. Their distribution is highly fragmented and the population living in the wild is estimated at about 870 to 1.290 individuals.
Some of the diverse threats to its survival include a reduction in its natural habitat, hunting the animal for its skin and bones for illegal commercial ends, and the direct persecution of the leopard by man because it is considered a threat to domestic cattle and local populations. The government of Kuzbass has an excellent page on the history of this region. You’ll need Google Translate to read it.
In 1698, Peter I, having learned about the silver ores found near the Kitat River, instructed the Tomsk voivode to “promote with all diligence and diligence the ore-seeking and ore-smelting business on the tributaries of the Kiya River.” Thus, the silver ores of Salair, iron ores in Gornaya Shoria, gold in the Kuznetsk Alatau were discovered. In 1721, the Cossack son of Mikhailo Volkov discovered a “burnt mountain” on the bank of the Tom River, becoming the discoverer of Kuznetsk coals. She revived the original Russian woodcut as an independent artistic phenomenon, worked in the technique of lithography and watercolors. A. P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva created an image of a majestic city on the Neva — modern and at the same time classic in its constant expressiveness. With poetic lyricism, the master conveys the peculiar charm of the Northern capital — strict architecture, the brilliance and transparency of the water channels, pale lighting. 150 years since the birth of A. Aruba issues a very small number of stamps yearly. 2021 saw three sets, covering tourism, agriculture and fishing, issued. The Aruban post office also supplied decent information on each stamp, making it a bit more fun for collectors as well.
Post Aruba did a nice job of promoting the people who created the issues. Designers Elvis Tromp and Rhona Lemminga attended a “Meet and Greet” on December 3, 2021 where they signed their First Day Covers. People who attended the event were treated to a talk by a local a fisherman who discussed the different fishing techniques in the December “Fishing” set.

If you managed to make it to the event and scooped a signed cover, pop me a message below. I’m interested in knowing what it was like.
On to the sun & surf.

Fofoti – Tourism

1 stamp on a souvenir sheet
offset lithography
The Fofoti is a mangle from the genre Combretaceae. This species grows in tropical and sub tropical regions around the world. It is green year-round and it grows inland on firm land, yet near salt water. Its English name is “Buttonwood” named after the shape of its fruit, a brown and round button-like shape.
One of the landmark Fofoti trees in Aruba is the one located on the Eagle Beach. It is a scenic location for where most tourists snap a photo at sunset. The particular shape of this Fofoti mangle is primarily due to the constant trade winds, and provides a stunning landscape on the ocean’s front. The Fofoti mangle is found on most locations around the island, however they are seen mostly in the Malmok area, Eagle Beach, Linear Park and Baby Beach. They are also found near most creeks like Rooi Prikichi, Rooi Canashito and at the Rooi at Sero Cristal.
The Fofoti as well as all other mangroves are protected by law.
